On the next update (answering also to other people's questions) will come mostly fixes and usability changes. There isn't any significant new features but an effort to establish better what we have.

On your problem, are you allowed to have a gmail.com account from your region? This is know address to work with the settings in the wiki.

and In my opinion, the lesson learnt from the story is that the mail
is most important thing for us(not an additional feature) as far as photo of the thief is concern.and in that story victim could not get his photo of the thief, and that is why police also did not help him.

about sms, i know this is also a very important feature . but this feature is already available in many phones. and our n900 is diffrent becouse it has ability to sends a photo of the thief(thanks for this app and all the dev.) that is the only reason we want email with photo or a new feature of uploading photo and sends a link via sms.

EDIT: yes i used gmail with many port(587 22 995 etc.) but it did not work.i am from india and i do not know what's wrong here only i want photo of the theif. any sggestion?

So, how's the new version going?

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Great app, been looking for something like this.

I would like to propose some features.

When the phone notices that the sim has changed, it's pretty likely that the crook is going to be facing the front camera for few next minutes. So there should be an option to take, let's say 3 photos, after sim change.

Also the picture command should work so, that it would take the picture when the screen or keyboard is used. Now it's more than likely to have pictures of someone's pocket.

It could also work so, that when the command is given, the phone would make beeping noise and there would be a question on the screen "Would you like to install updates?". When the crook selects either option, the image is taken.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Release 0.8 will have the following:
  • NEW: added new user setting (ENABLECHECKHOST) to activate smscon with a file on user's own server (CHECKHOST); when file content changes from '0' to a specific number ('1', '2', '3' etc.) smscon will execute corresponding SMS command. So user can -silently- activate smscon. Smscon will check for this file with a user defined interval (CHECKTIME).
  • NEW/CHANGE: expanded user setting MESSAGESEND ('sms', 'email', 'both' & 'none').
  • CHANGE: removed DISABLESMS user setting. This is superseded by MESSAGESEND user setting!
  • CHANGE: SIM card change SMS always will be send regardless of MESSAGESEND setting.
  • NEW: added smscon command (COM_ALARM); phone will play loud a user configurable sound file (only WAV) when command is received. File must be placed in /opt/smscon and be named 'alarm.wav'.
  • NEW: smscon_daemon sends SMS/email message if smscon_daemon crashes.
  • CHANGE: changed user setting ENABLERESEND ('yes', 'no'). Resending of messages will again be experimental feature!
  • CHANGE: removed user setting MAXRESEND (didn't work as intended).
  • CHANGE: some log text changed/added.
  • CHANGE: some changes in GPS message sending code.
  • CHANGE: AUTODEVICELOCK message is only send if COMMANDREPLY is enabled.
  • FIX: small bug in SMSsend().
  • FIX: bug in GPSINTERVAL handeling; GPSINTERVAL was always set at 60 sec regardless of user setting.

When released it al will be explained in the WIKI

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hi to all,
I have installed smscon and editor today, loved every idea and effort behind them, thanks.
Everything seems working, but my N900 is not locking. When it receives sms, locking password screen comes, but if you touch empty area, it says device is not locked. I tried to cancel any password from settings/device lock, so it can directly lock itself, device lock settings are not allowing to empty password as far as I can see.
Am I missing something?
I tried to scan this thread, but it is too long, so sorry if answered before...

edit: Ok, nobody answered, but I think I solved my problem. After manually locking device with "secure device" option in power button menu, my n900 seems to accept locks wit smscon.
I checked all the thread and found out that this problem/question asked by others several times and never got an answer. Probably most of users don't encounter this problem. I hope this helps others.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I am finding this very useful.

I am not using quite how it was intended so I have modified it slightly for myself. Modifications are:
1. I set EMAILFROM to be the same as user so that my ISP didn't reject emails.

2. I turned off changing the SENDERNUMBER when SMS received from a different phone

3. I added extra functionality to the receiveSMS function so that the sender can change the email address or sender number on the fly, e.g. SMS is Camera e=name@isp or Location n=XXXXX.

4. The sender can also send a string of commands that get executed one at a time, e.g. Camera Location.

If anyone is interested in this, I can send the updates to the author.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

can you add one more option to send photo to email what is taken from main camera(most of the theif would try to snap his own or friends photo) because front camera does not take pictures in the dark.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I noticed, whenever I Disable sms replies and I exit the program and re-activated it, the check-mark stays but the gray area for the sms replies are there and can be checked back.

Also, if you disable sms replies, how will you check the status of the phone? is there another way like using linux shell or something? or can that information be sent to your email?

This has been fixed in the next version. At the time, didn't know how to do this properly - now I know a little more..

This is just to inform if the command you sent has been registered. It has nothing to do with the result of the command itself. For example if you send the Location command you will get an SMS reply that the command has been activated in the phone and later depending on your other settings you will get the coordinates. Disabling the SMS replies will only stop the first SMS and not the Location command result.

It is also more clear in the next version.

Alright that's what I was thinking too but whenever I send a location command, I see my GPS signal comes on but I don't receive any text message. Mmm... maybe I am doing something wrong. Also, I downloaded this yesterday so I assume the issue with Disable SMS replies got fixed... particularly since there is no new update for it. But it seem the problem still persists.

Also is it possible to make it so that the program cannot be removed without the correct password is entered? Anyway, lets take care of my problems first.

I sent a "Location" text to the phone but never received anything back. The same with other commands, eg. "Power", never received any text. Anything I am doing wrong?

The next version hasn't been yet uploaded.

You can check the log file for what is going on:
Code:

cat /tmp/smscon.log

Attached is my log file. It seems my sms sending is turned off. How do I turn it on? Is it the disable sms reponse option? if not, how do I turn it on? If it is, then what is the essence of turning it on if it only replies when that feature is on? In other words, isn't the purpose of this application to know the status of the device at a remote location?

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I love this app and have spent far too long playing with it already so thank you!
I do have three queries though:

01 - What is the usage of the COM_SHELL command? As far as I can tell I have to hard-code it to the command I will want to send and then I have to re-create that code in the activating text. Is there some way to set a COME_SHELL prefix so that any shell command that follows it will be run? Ideally this would return the first 160 chars of STDOUT as an sms.

02 - When I select not to lock the phone on all commands I always get an "unlock" notification sms for all commands, even if I have selected not to receive responses. Also when I send "Unlock" I get "already unlocked" back even when it isn't!

03 - The "prefix" box in SMSCon-editor is very short, I could with being able to enter 15 characters!

Thanks again

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Sorry, don't seem to be able to help myself:

04 - Can we define somewhere what text appears at the start of the return sms (currently "NOKIA N900 HH:MM:SS DD/MM/YYYY -command-" for me) and Trackeron sms/emails? Not bothered if this is by editing a config file, just would like it to persist through upgrades!

05 - I understand it would be hard to hook the messages as they arrive but is it possible to clean them up afterwards?
Code:

sqlite3 /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger/el-v1.db
> de lete from events where free_text IN (csv of commands)

The conversations window overview still shows it though until it has another reason to refresh...

06 - The option not to change the return phone number when sms received. Whatever phone I use to activate SMSCon I would like it to text my Twitter account back!

07 - Pre and Post command scripts. Then I could implement my own attempts to do these things!

08 - Hide the GPS icon when using "Location" or "Trackeron". e.g:
Code:

mv /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/location.desktop /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/disabled/
Then move it back after gps fix.

hutchinsfairy 2011-05-06 09:29

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

PS:
Code:

killall rtcom-messaging-ui
will refresh conversation overview but might be overkill...

smscon -start output:

Quote:

ps: invalid option --a
BusyBox v1.18.4

Usage: ps

ps: invalid option -- a

ERROR: smscon daemon failed to start
Well it seems that smscon -start tries to do a ps -a, but ps won't allow any option as a BusyBox binary.

How can I get rid of this error?

Thanks

got the same error with ps (Enhanced BusyBox is installed), you should install procps package: it will substitute ps with a working version and will give you a much nicer output of the "top" command

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

hmm, i am having a wierd problem. i tried to install smscon and editor withe the command "apt-get install smscon*".
but apparently, smscon-editor needs smscon 0.8 while such a version does not exist in the repos. i then manually installed smscon and editor 0.7 from packages.maemo.com and it works.

So what happened?

Disable the devel and install the stable version..

The devel has the future version and correctly doesn't allow you to install it since not all of its components have been uploaded yet.
The changes to be introduced are not backwards compatible.

Maybe you had installed (partially) from devel and now you have disabled that repo?
There is a newer version in devel.

what do you get for
Code:

apt-get -s -f install

The reason of it is explained above. Quick solution is to specify the version for smscon-editor via terminal:
Code:

apt-get install  smscon-editor=0.7-4
(you can check available versions by 'apt-cache policy smscon-editor' command)
