Disappointment. :( Plus the sketches made me very enthusiastic, it's actually not ugly at all. :(

Sure.
By the way, I just quoted your post as it was the first matching post I could find. My post was intended as a sort of general statement. No offense meant. :)

Excuse me if this has been asked before, but what does the custom color option refer to? Is it the color of the keyboard or the color of the case, other than for the Lastucase backplate?

Kabouik 2014-11-12 09:31

Re: TOHKBD rev2

It's the color of the case, and apparently it will be possible to mix colors for the Jolla part and the keyboard part.

Damn, I feel so sorry that the slimmer design is already abandonned. :<

No problem. Any idea where I could find accurate dimensions for the phone itself the & TOHKB pieces (including stuff like thickness of the wood etc)? I'd like to improve my sketch & then try out a few colour combinations to help in making the hard decisions.

Had to do some tests before I could confirm, but for all non-wood-lovers:

Brushed steel, brushed black steel and carbon-fiber backplates.
https://dl.dropbox.com/s/zkeh1pyvcp49tcn/wrap.jpg

This bumps the total possible tohkbd colour&layout options to 4200.

Not actual carbon or steel by the way, but looks and feels very awesome.

What type of material is it? Plastic? Or metal?

I think I like brushed black steel, thanks for having kept investigating alternatives!

For what it's worth, those "modern" backplates would certainly look very good with visible magnets. :O

it's vinyl! needs some work and extra parts to attach it, but will prove to be worth the extra effort.

Dirk, how will you deal with orders from people outside the countries where Jolla ships phones, and who have no Jolla yet but pledged to get the keyboard + the 100€ coupon? Have you an idea already of how many they are? Will Jolla ensure shipping to their country or will they have to cancel their pledge?

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Vinyl? Then maybe they are even thinner...

Thin, thinner, thinnest!

This is clearly stated on the KS page, the coupon is valid with shipping to the EU, Norway and Switzerland. If you are not in one of these places, the coupon does not work for you. You can send it to someone else in the EU that orders the phone for you, like this is done currently for some people.

Don't know how many there are, but most names look pretty Scandic.

did not see it mentioned here, looks like vkb hiding is already done, from KS update3:

Software

Kimmo has been working hard on the keyboard drivers and there is a lot of progress. Auto-hide of the virtual keyboard is working, back-light goes on and off depending on ambient light and lots more is being made as we speak.

Oh man, will you have examples on Slush? I now really think I need to check the feels, if you had some could look if any cheap flights are still available

So let me get this straight.
The people who bought the €100 option, can pledge €10 more to get a custom color..?

Oh man, so the early birds who pledged €120 for custom color are paying €10 more?

Not fair.. :(

Yes, this is always a problem. Pleasing everyone equally is not possible unfortunately.

What I can do is give everyone at least what they pledged for and in this case I have done -and will continue to do- upgrades to give everyone more than they pledged for.

It is a puzzle that cannot be solved by me at this point, but it is a bit of 1st world problem.

I pledged €140 for a custom colour and I don't really mind this development. Any little "extra" any of us pledge is going to a properly good cause.

Nice, I'm actually a bit torn between the brown wood and the black brushed metal.

Why are they all cut to that shape?

From Kickstarter update:

The backplate will have a very slightly different shape, because the bottom piece is reshaped, to remove the need for screws

Just a shame the bigger outlets can't / won't report on it. I emailed Engadget, The Verge, Ars Technica - none of them have picked the story up. Would be a huge boon to TOHKBD if it got some exposure in the more mainstream tech media.

They are all US rags, so you can't really expect them to be interested in a specifically non-US device...

Engadget has a UK Edition of their site - and the non-availability of gadgets in the US hasn't stopped new tech announcements from popping up on either of the other sites in the past.

Hello everybody,

I'm going to join the party, just waiting some money on card :)
So, I read this topic from page 45, google a bit, and have some questions left:

1) seems kbd/case parts printerd via shapeways - how hard will be to replace those 2 big visible parts to another ones, printed/ordered from SW?

2) I can't imagine some good combination of colours, and think about white or alimide. According to SW alumide made from aluminium dust + plastic - how much it affect radio in phone?

hmm... if swap case parts is simple thing - maybe it is possible to order bunch of them directly via KS campagin? :D

Thoke 2014-11-19 14:45

Re: TOHKBD rev2

If anyone was wondering about the colours, I searched through threads and found these:

Lots of colors---a few more---plus still a few. Posting them here so you don't have to go through the trouble finding them yourself.

There will be some casings and pcbs waiting on me when i get home.

If they are correct, everything fits and lines up then the design is final and I will order them in all colours for your viewing pleasure. Will not ask for people to make a final decision before those are in. Will not make pictures of all combo's. (that would be 700 without different layouts)

Why not release some "easy color picker" app like all manufactures use? They dont take 12384238 pictures for different colors you know :p
