Re: Jolla tablet countup to delivery[Now With Poll]

Hey, just got an e-mail from Jolla; it appears that they will be offering a few more tablet "pre-orders", now that they are close to shipping. Here are some quotes from the message:

Quote:

A limited batch of Jolla Tablets will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, August 20, and we'd like you to know about it here first!
and

Quote:

The pre-order prices will be 267€ and 299€ for the 32GB and 64GB versions respectively, including VAT 24% (prices will vary by country).

Re: Jolla tablet countup to delivery[Now With Poll]

And, here's a blog posting for the new pre-orders:

https://blog.jolla.com/pre-orders-jo...blet-now-open/

They are being sold from the Jolla Shop:

http://shop.jolla.com/preorder_shop_...la-tablet.html

EDIT: One more interesting bit of info from the blog:

Quote:

Shipments for earlier Indiegogo contributors will start in early September, and shipments to pre-order customers from this phase are expected to start in the end of October.

Adobe Flash on mobile devices is dead and not even supported by Adobe for years.
Of course you could dig up ancient Android Flash apk's and an Android browser that can make use of it.

Are you sure that what you want is really Flash videos? HTML5 is the current standard for videos on the web, and used by most video platforms nowadays.

This post brings me nostalgia to the good old days back in '10 - '11 with recurring discussion briefly going like
"flash does not play..."
"who wants flash anyway, HML5 is the future..."
"ok, but I want to play video's NOW"
"tweakflash"

Since then I learned not to be demanding about mobile video playback.

So I would like to hear, regading HTML5, did the future really arrive or..?

my opensuse laptop will happily play pretty much anything on youtube, despite not having flash enabled.

so yes, i'd say the future has arrived.

no longer letting me select UK as a delivery address, does this mean the store has run out of pre-order devices?

It's just the BBC who are in the past and drive my requirement for get_iplayer and/or youtube-dl.

Yeah wtf is up with that?

I use Firefox on my desktop PC (Fedora), but have removed Flashplayer, and find myself having to use Google Chrome when I want to view BBC content.

It's 2015 guys!

Yes and BBC removed API allowing kodi to be used for BBC, this did work very nicely for some time.

PS! What about BBC' Android app? It that working OK?

Re: Jolla tablet countup to delivery[Now With Poll]

One tip - as mpv uses youtube-dl, it can open a BBC link directly. Otherwise I use get_iplayer for radio (inc. live). Works very well. Bound keys to them in my browser, too.

Sorry for continuing O/T.

Wish I'd waited too, when I eventually get to pay the vat it won't far off the jolla store price.

Not sure, as for my situation it seems I can enjoy some profit.

199 USD * 0,82 Euro / USD (11/2014) = 163 Euro for Tablet
25 * 0,90 Euro / USD = 22,5 Euro (29/03/2015) for upgrade to 64GB
20 * 0,90 Euro / USD = 18 Euro (29/03/2014) for transport

Total = 203,5 Euro

+VAT 21% on USD invoice of 244 USD => 51,2 USD * 0,88 USD / Euro (exchange rate to be seen in early Sept) = 45,09 Euro

That gives a total price of 249 Euro for 64 GB, transport included vs 310,26 Euro in case I would order with the currrent pre-order option.

That's a difference of 61 Euro's or 20% discount something or a Lastu Case.

Bonus:

+supported campaign to make it happen

+be FIRST ONE™ to receive the tablet (and to collect huge eBay price) because pre-orders start shipping weeks later.

So I don't regret to be early backer. :)

PS Correct me if I am wrong, pls

edit: adjusted from 24% to 21% VAT tax.

BTW, the Jolla Tablet web page has been updated a bit to show that pre-orders are now being taken. The rest hasn't been changed too much, but there is at least one screenshot that looks new to me:

Good maths! I think I bought at $209 + 20 + 25 + tax.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad I backed it, just would have meant it could have had a few extra Xmas beers if I waited :D

I was surely tempted to get another one yesterday, but finally my brain started working and I was able to resist the urge. So now I have to settle for the one I ordered via indiegogo.

TBH I'm enjoying it on my SP3 (i7/512GB/8GB), which is currently triple booting: Win10, Win8, & Win10_WI.
There's some annoyances compared to Win8 (they almost did a complete u-turn away from their tablet-centric users), but overall I'm preferring it.
But we digress, dedicated thread for further chatter on this is here...

Re: Jolla tablet countup to delivery[Now With Poll]

Another item of interest on the Jolla Tablet webpage... I only just noticed this, but in the technical specifications section, they now have an asterisk next to these items:
  • Full HD 1080p video
  • MicroSD slot (up to 128 GB)
  • Hall sensor
  • Micro-USB OTG

Beneath the specs, they have:

Quote:

* Support for this feature coming in SW update
I would guess that this means that there are still some technical issues in Sailfish with support for those features. However, I think that would also mean that the version of Sailfish for the first batch of tablets has probably been frozen. So, presumably, Jolla has advanced one more step towards actually shipping the tablets... :)

Sun is not totally gone, but was acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010.
Would it not make more sense to buy an Oracle SPARC server if you miss sun, nice specs, but a bit larger than a tablet?

Re: Jolla tablet countup to delivery[Now With Poll]

Here's another new item at the Jolla website, a FAQ for pre-orders (both from the Jolla store and from the 3rd round of the Jolla Tablet Indiegogo site -- I didn't even notice that they'd opened the Indiegogo page back up):

https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/a...a-Jolla-Tablet

In the technical specs section, they mention that the headphone jack follows the AHJ standard (same as the Jolla phone).

One interesting item is that you can order up to 10 tablets, and shipping will remain 20 euro for the whole order. :)

An item that isn't new, but nice to get more confirmation: they do plan to have all the tablets ordered from the earlier Indiegogo rounds shipped before the end of October:

Quote:

When are you going to ship pre-ordered Tablets?

We aim to ship pre-ordered Tablets by the end of October 2015. Please note that the delivery date is subject to change. We will keep you updated on the schedule in our update emails and in the Jolla Blog.

We aim to start shipping pre-order Tablets only after completing shipments to contributors from our earlier Indiegogo campaign rounds.

Ah, sorry, I phrased that poorly. :) The current estimate of when shipping will begin is "early September"; and, with this statement, the estimate of when shipping will end (for the roughly 10000 early contributors) is the end of October. Thus, it would seem that they plan to finish shipping all 10000 tablets within about a month and a half after they start...

A subtle but interesting change on the tablet website; the asterisk at the bottom of the technical specs section now says that the software update will take a while:

Quote:

* Support for this feature coming in SW update during 2015
EDIT: (previous comments removed, I got confused..) Ack! I read that as "2016", not "2015". :) My bad, too sleepy. So, I guess, the update will be _sooner_ than I thought... Man, I've gotta get more sleep.

Ah, thanks. Tbh I was expecting it. After 6 weeks and 4 versions of 1.1.7 we still don't have a stable release, and none of the 4 versions are anything like stable for me. I'd probably have to go back to May or early June of last year for the last time I had this many system reboots and full crashes. I get multiple ones every day. The keyboard freezing / transition freezes are also back with a vengeance for me. It makes you wonder what kind of state 2.0 will be in ...
