Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800

I clicked on the link above for libffi and it installed just fine. Now, when I try to install Python 2.5 it can't find dpkg!!!

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800

NEWBIE ALERT! (that would be me). Sorry for lack of detail above. It states:
Application packages missing: python2.5-minimal (>=2.5.0)
dpkg (>=1.13.20)
So, the python2.5-minimal is present in the list of installable apps, but trying to install it still comes up with the same missing package: dpkg.

Did you choose OPEN at the prompt or SAVE? As soon as as I saw the link, I clicked on it and chose OPEN. Installed just fine.

Nope. Despite the right name... Installation gives the error message:

Nokia had to have noticed this: some of their coolest apps are in Python. Anyone else found a compatible libffi?

Did you perhaps try to install it through application manager? It's in Section: libs and AP only likes stuff in 'user' (or 'user/something'). You could try to install it through apt-get or dpkg instead. Or possibly AP would accept it in red pill mode, but I haven't checked that -- I stay off the red pill these days.

Again, Nope!

First, the library does not appear in libs under the Application Manager.

Second, if I try apt-get in the xterm, here's what I get as a result:

Nokia-N800-39:~# apt-get install libffi4
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package libffi4 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libffi4 has no installation candidate

It's possible my sources.list file is not set up correctly. Where did you get the libffi4?

Perhaps something went wrong with my install. I can't use the MicroB browser either.

Anyway...I'm still looking for a libffi4

If it just doesn't work, which is what seems to be being implied, how come I was able to install it after reading your message?

It's in 'Section: libs' in the control file in the .deb.

I downloaded it from the link of a few posts above so that I could unpack it with dpkg-deb and take a look at the control file.

In any case, if you're accessing it from a repository then you can also do 'apt-cache show libffi4' to get an idea of what it requires etc.

EDIT: You can also do 'apt-cache policy libffi4' to display which repository you're getting it from. This could be useful in case there are several variants around.

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p.../libf/libffi4/

What happened when you double clicked on the link on this page?

When I clicked on the one that doesn't refer to a 386 or to dev, it installed just fine.

Well...there's part of the problem, I guess. Here's my response.

Nokia-N800-39:~# apt-cache show libffi4
Nokia-N800-39:~# apt-cache policy libffi4
libffi4:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: (none)
Version table:

So I guess I don't have the right repository set. I have all my repositories from the last firmware (I did a backup and restore) and I have the "extras" repository set.

Where should we get this? What repository is it on? Since others are having this problem, I hope I'm not bugging the list here with just my problem.
