No issues connecting an unmodified USB hub to my pigtail adapter. If you buy adapters on Internet it is hard to be certain they will do what you want. Many N800 owners recently bought Mini-B to Female-A USB adapters only to learn they failed to automatically trigger host mode when inserted into the N800. These people still had to gainroot in xterm and type a lengthy command because the adapter they received was missing the pin 4 and 5 connection. Also, beware of sellers saying, "compatible with USB OTG". They say that but the adapter still doesn't have the pin 4 to 5 connection. Frequently sellers don't know what they are selling....this is especially true on eBay.

Someone here on ITT posted some scripts that save you the hassle of typing the command string in xterm to configure Host Mode. That is good, but I prefer that my N800 automatically enter Host Mode when I plug my pigtail or hub into the N800.

Good going ! The thing for people to be aware of about external hard drives and the N800 is that the hard drive cannot be formatted NTFS if you want file manager in the N800 to read and write to the drive.

This was my first attempt to see if HOST mode works.
IT WORKS...

Now... the main purpose for me to try this is:

Can I plug an USB 3g modem to access internet?
I don't have that modem yet, but I will have it this week. So I don't have details about manufacturer.

Very good.

I think I read somewhere that the N800 will not source more than 100 milliamps as USB host. You stuck an unpowered hub and two flash drives (memory sticks) simultaneously on the N800 and it worked? That is good but I have to think you were very close to the threshold where the N800 was going to terminate 5volt output power.

what is the limit of the file system that file manager can read? 32 gb with Fat32?

Well any single partition cannot exceed ~32gig.

I do not know if the N800 OS2008 has any further restrictions beyond this. I imagine you could have one huge drive with multiple FAT32 partitions, but I have not verified this.

For me it was easier to use the method of putting it in the osso-statusbar-cpu gui than cutting and soldering wire.

FAT32 Partitions > 32GB possible with third party apps
 

Actually, you can have primary FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB if you use third party programs such as Partition Magic. Works like a charm when I tried it with a 400GB hdd + usb hdd enclosure connected to a Philips DVD Player with USB support:

The above DVD player is cheap.. about $50.. so I presume (but not sure) if the N800 can access > 32GB FAT32 partitions.

Any chance this will work with the N810 and the appropriate Micro USB plug instead of the mini usb on the N800??
