I do agree that there is some valuable *potential* here (with the disclaimer that I loathe facebook per se)... I think it would be best though to wait for future (read: improved) hardware.

I would love to have this, but when the hardware just can't handle it... there's no point in trying to add it just to get more people complaining that it doesn't work afterwards.

I'm interested to know why you think the hardware can't handle it... Isn't it just a straight video throughput to the video collection app? If the camera is transmitting 12fps of Flash video to an online app, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be captured adequately. And, if it can't, drop it to 8fps... Most people use these sorts of things for communication purposes anyway (e.g., Facebook), not for capturing high-quality video.

The hardware can handle it under the best possible circumstances at the lowest possible threshold of general acceptance. IMO a better margin of tolerance is called for, one that will likely call for increased onboard ram and CPU horsepower.

I can tell you haven't used any of the camera applications very much, as I have. They all tend to lock up the tablet if you are doing anything else at the same time... sometimes, even if you aren't. It happens quite often. It would happen just as often with Flash, maybe even more so because of the extra crap Flash needs.

I can see an N900 being able to do it, possibly.

Possibly, but I have recorded a number of videos with my N800 and at no time did I ever crash or freeze. But, of course, I wasn't running any other software at the time, but... People should realize that if they're trying to record video straight to a web app... And, that's what I'm trying to say, I guess... If the expectation was that you could only have one app open, the video quality would be poor, but it would work. Well, I could live with that anyway. ;)

Greetings:

Comments from people who program against people who are marketers.

This is what I see here.

You will be pleased to know that I am a marketer, and can't write a linux line of code.
As a marketer this feature on the Nokia N800 would sell very well.

I understand that video quality is important, but I've heard people who used Gizmo video on the N800/810 and they state the video is acceptable, not poor.

So I state, let the marketers take care of selling the feature, and tell the coders to go ahead and develop it.

Also, ZeroJay and Texrat, two Canadians I believe, Canada is a country of doers.

Re: Facebook Video - Flashplayer/Video/Microphone

Greetings:

I'm putting attention back into this Post because other Internet Tablets have more features.

This week at CES(Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas many bloggers were using either OQO model 2, or HTC Advantage, and they could have done a live video, sit somewhere on the exhibition floor and within seconds post a blog with video on their Blog pages.

This can not be done with the N800 at this moment, unless I stand corrected.

I actually tested a Asian SD flashcard Camcorder making a 1 minute video and then transfering the SD card to the N800, MediaPlayer could not read the video I had just made.
Second I used my Canon S5 Digital Camera on Video mode, made the same 1 minute video, again tranfered the SD card to N800, MediaPlayer still can't read the video file.
Yes, I know there is a video converter apps for maemo, but this is too much work.

With the 2007 OS firmware there was a maemo apps that was called Camera, and it had a video recording feature, at least you could have used this feature to do a
short video and post it on your blog.
Now for 2008 OS firmware, the apps Camera can only take pictures, what happened?

This is why someone must develop linux flash for the N800 webcam to work directly with YouTube intergration.
If Nokia wants to be competitive it must keep listening to its users and what they want.

Isn't texrat from the land of the Deciders.

but zero, you should give peekaboo a try, video stream on that works pretty well and it too building The VLC for that.
so flash might do well with the camera also.
