Is there even a point of having map if you don't have a Navicore key? Or is there some free way to download maps that I'm missing..

The maps are free. Open the application and download away.

Hmm it might just be my connection then cause it always errors out when I tried to get the maps. I don't have to enter any keys right? not even the trial one?

While downloading? You need to make sure you have at least twice the size of the maps of free space available on your internal flash.

Nah it can't even refresh the list of maps. But how big is North America east?

Re: Has anyone uninstalled the default Map app?

I just downloaded it a couple days ago -- I think it was 733 MB for the east coast. I had to open up 1.5GB on my card to install it.

I gotta say, I used TomTom Nav 5 for a couple years, and the maps and the address location algorithm on Maps is far, far better than TomTom. TTN5 might get you to within a block or two, but Maps will pinpoint the right house.

I didn't get the chance to view TTN6 maps, but Maps are far better than TTN5's. TTN5 doesn't allow inputting lat/lon coordinates, but Maps does. And Maps works really well with my TomTom bluetooth receiver.

I'm going to try Maemo Mapper, but I'm not thrilled with the prospect of having to download individual Google maps for my entire route. That's just too lame. I'd rather pay $30 a year for the off-line routing capability and get free maps updated every year. That's a small price to pay for a complete, quality package, IMHO.

I'm hanging on to Mapopolis and my Palm for awhile. Roadnav on the Eee may be workable, but it has issues, and I'm not ready to trust it. It assumes everything is a two-way street, incuding both directions of an interstate highway. I don't have a phone with a data plan, and don't plan on getting one, so MM is out for real use, it's just a toy for now. I would pay money for a decent robust program, but none exists, either for Maemo or for Xandros.

Re: Has anyone uninstalled the default Map app?

I am in South Africa and have tried downloading the SA map about 5 times now without any luck Bombs out about halfway which is strange as its only 29M. Someone mentioned that it can be downloaded on pc - whats the url? PS the navigation on the Nokia 6110 navigator is amazing - better than the 2 yr old system in my car. So I dont buy this distinction between a 'real' GPS and the N810. Whats missing is the will and time spend and money to build a proper app. I love the open source nature of the N810, but if it means I cant do wordprocessing and proper nav on it then I am a bit dismayed.

Yeah, exactly. Sorry for the bad terminology.

However, what do you mean by a "real" [PND]? A PND would be any device that provides for geolocation, some map support, routing, and geo-search. This could mean a lot of things depending on quality and level of implementation.

I think that the N810 with the supplied Map application is not ready to substitute a dedicated device as those from Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and so on. Their main application IS to guide you wherever you want wherever you are and that's it.
The tablet application is ALSO to guide you when you need to, but it's not its main task.
I think they developed the Map application with that in mind.
At least, I hope so :)

The built-in Maps application, in my opinion, is just embarrasing. MaemoMapper should have been included by default - as it is better implemented, fuller featured, and abides by the current goals of Maemo in being open-source and having a community. It also utilizes free and open map sources (OpenStreetMap) instead of requiring inane, and ill-working, map downloads in the hundreds of megabytes.
If you download, for example, the full Italy maps from MaemoMapper I think it'll end up more than the 231Mb of the Map's maps.
And w/o an Internet connection can't re-route and can't download new maps (if you end up in an area that you didn't download).

I am playing the evil's advocate here.

Thanks, guys. I will uninstall the Map app and do without for the next week and see how things go. MM will probably be the way to go. :D
