Re: Offline mode disappeared

Sorry to bring this one back. I didnot quite follow the process since I know nothing about Linux and I am not able to fix this disappearing of the offline mode which happened to my N800 a few days back. What program do I use to get into "/var/lib/mce/mode"? and where do I download the file? Is SSH server or easyroot a program to open the file and vi is the file editor? Where can i find these files? Appreciated if comeone can point me to the right direction.

I installed the easyroot and the emelFM2 to the IT. Still need some help to clarify how to save the editted file. emelFM2 tells me I don't have permission to save file. I also used xterm but just not sure how to get to the file. Please help.

Re: Offline mode disappeared

alfa2536,

On my system, the file /var/lib/mce/mode is owned by root, and writable only by root. There are many threads around to show you how to obtain root access, check them out. The easiest I found was to install openssh and then do:
Code:

ssh root@localhost
You can use any text editor to edit the file. If vi is out of your league, you can simply use the following command ONLY if you are sure the file is empty. Running this command will squash all data currently in the file, so check it first.

Code:

echo "normal" > /var/lib/mce/mode
Hope this helps.

*Edit: Upon further thought, while this fixed the problem for me also, I have no idea why, or how this occurred. I'd love to get to the bottom of this. I hate just changing configurations without knowing fully what they do, and how they changed to begin with.

Thanks so much alphalux. You just saved me from re-flashing the unit. I used your second suggested option after making sure the file is empty. It worked. Thanks again.:)

Eventually I came back to this and got it working thanks again. I am glad some others seemed to benefit from the thread as well.
