I actually had a go at this. Which dependencies do you mean? lua-curl depends on libcurl3-gnutls-dev and lua5.1-policy-dev. libcurl3-gnutls-dev from etch requires libssl-dev above the maemo version, and there's no sarge version. When I try forcing the compile it hangs. So I gave up.

I take everything from testing (lenny) and if I'm really stuck Etch.
Sarge is way too old.

For me it doesn't hang, it segfauts. Ah well, I'll try harder and post notes like you did if I manage.
