Life would improve more if my N800 did not reppeaatt letters at random. Ever since the new OS, typing is a pain. Since I did not see this in the beta versions, I can't figure how it leaked into the final.

If you install maemocjk, it does exactly what you wanted -- replaced the hildon keyboard totally with matchbox keyboard. You may ask the author how he did it? Otherwise, you may want to try installing maemocjk to check out this replacement -- of course you don't have to use CJK input :)

I am seeing the same random repeat problem. Anybody knows of a solution?

That should fix your problem. It also fixes the problem in VNC.

Strange. When I try this, hitting RET on the matchbox keyboard toggles the display of the "normal" stylus keyboard. That's marginally better than having the finger keyboard come up (especially when I have the screen in portrait mode...) but not really what I want.

Might there be something else that I need to set/unset?
