Re: N8x0 Maemo vs. Windows Mobile 6
What kills me is that all these WM devices can use all the hardware on the device to create a great experience.
Maemo doesn't have the bloody software to use the brilliant hardware. We could be in mobile graphics and video playback heaven if Nokia would pony up the dough for a driver. The experience could be so much better. But, alas, politics. |

I do NOT know what I am saying here, but I said it anyway. Tough. I have Hava. You paid to get TV into your tablet. The video resolution is alright. I got free TV round the world, (install from my signiture), 25 % of them has better audio/video resolution than the paid TV service! In particular, the CBS eveningnews (VCURLs72) and kissTV (extended stereo, WorldTV99 1.0), ALL CBC channels (99WorldTV 3.09, I will probably upload tomorrow. Yes, WorldTV99 just exploded from version 1.0 to 2, and now 3). Here, we are talking only video/audio quality. That being said, the paid Hava is a beta program, so there maybe improvement on the way. Dont get me wrong, the Hava is very watchable/enjoyable at its present status and I highly recommend for the Nokia community. I am saying that the video quality could be improved as it has NOT reached the hardware limitation as seen in the world TV. bun |

The hardware even with a driver can not drive the resolution of the NIT. That's why WM and iPhone don't try to go beyond 640x480. Not a lot of mobile hardware CPU, GPU support it. Nokia was pushing the envelope. Now TI's newer hardware has caught up with what Nokia brought to market with th 770 originally as far as resolution. |

Nokia has been looking into the PowerVR, but that facts are that the drivers suck and they've found that it wouldn't be much help. |

It'd be nice to have the PowerVR to help render those images behind the scenes, so that even if we can't shove too many images through to the screen, we can still render 3D faster and more efficiently using the chip inside than any software. Besides, it's of no importance that it may not be practical to implement. What's of importance is that I paid for it and that I can't use it, even if I simply want to tinker and brick my damnedable tablet in the process. *Edit* The drivers suck? That's an excuse from Nokia? Where? Don't "..you pine for the days when men were men and wrote their own device drivers?" ;) |
Re: N8x0 Maemo vs. Windows Mobile 6
Alright, let's break this down.

Offloading 3d rendering is a separate issue, and wont solve any of the video bandwidth issues affecting video playback performance. Quote:

Some TV channels are rendering way much better than the others, clearly supporting Aisu's point, we are NOT at the limit of our hardware, yet. Why dont you two take a peek of the channels I am talking about, see whether bun is full of it, or you do agree that these particular channels are quite above others. Going back to GA. You are saying bandwidth is to be blame for poor video performance. Well, bandwidth certainly IS a determining factor. However, Garbage In, Garbage Out and one cannot make chicken salad from chicken $hit. So, to put pretty videos on the tablet, you need more than bandwidth. Good nite, got to go to work at 6a in the mornin'.......... Have a good nite, bun |
