Well, Java apps probably won't need rewritten. So Eclipse and Jake2 should be good to go. What more do you want?

Totally on board with the alongside thing; but it is possible to write an X11 server in Java, so a hybrid based on Android is just conceivable. (No, I don't think it's good, just possible.)

In the end, I HIGHLY doubt that that will be true. It's what the Android developers want, but do you want to take bets on how long it takes for hackers to expose underlying linux layers to potential developers of native programs?

(as for "no x server" -- it wouldn't be the first time people ran graphical linux apps with direct-to-video-hardware libraries)

I think it will be much cooler if and when android runs alongside maemo rather than instead of maemo.
I agree. I think the ideal for me would be either:

Maemo with Android Extensions/support
or
Ubuntu Mobile/Moblin with Android Extensions/support

depending upon the specific device being discussed.

Hmmm as a programmer with more Java experience than anything else I'd love to be able to run Android on my N810!

But I don't like it to the point where I'd give up the freedom of choosing my OS. I'd rather be able to run Maemo, Android, Ubuntu Mobile, and possibly that Debian ARM port all together :) (obviously not all at once)
