the only one that has a linux option is the X70
Maybe another benefit of the 7" screen is that something like this would work

would have liked to see the S7 with some Ubuntu variant on it.
Android might work well? It took to the Eee PC pretty easily

A video preview of the S5 is available:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/11/v...ow-with-video/

The good: Quite snappy and lasts pretty long (not ARM long, but hey, it's still only an Atom).

The bad: Apparently no SD slot or mic in, mechanical harddrive. Regular windows is a bit tricky without mouse + kbd, but, who in his right mind would use windows XP on his MID, right ?

The ugly: Will cost around 700 euros (ouch, not sure if it's the price for the 3G version or not), almost twice as thick and twice as heavy as your trusty N810 (you better double stitch that pocket :) )

Size/weight comparison:
N810 Dimensions 72 * 128 * 14 mm, Weight 226 g
S5 Dimensions 84 * 154 * 24 mm, Weight 436 g

A small number on sale soon in US. A preview indicates that the claim to 200 hrs of true standby mode might hold up:

To my mind, standby was one of the biggest unknowns (and disqualifier) of atom based MIDs. The Viliv in this review at first sounds like a possible successor to my N800 + BT Stowaway, but still, it has a Windows XP and HDD and has no SD slot or 3G or camera.

In x86, standby means all activity is suspended but memory contents are retained. It is NOT to be confused with IDLE mode on ARM processors. In standby, your IM is not running, email is not checked, etc. you just don't have to reboot to start using it.

I was suprised to see the size of the S5 is very close to the N800, but the screen resolution on the S5 is 1024 x 600!

Re: viliv S5 - nice specs

given how windows does desktop, i fear that will not help much as most of the "gained" space will be wasted by having to bump the font size to readable...

If it had a keyboard, and Ubuntu... maybe.
