I got my n810 in April of 08 (of course) and I must say I am slowly intergrating into my life.

It runs my car audio system and I use it with carman as well to check out my engine stats every now and again (program will be awesome when it fully develops), I am getting Home Automation stuff for christmas this year and I will be using my N810 to be a mobile remote for my entire house as soon as possible.

I've barly scratche dthe surface for making this a go everywhere device. Even with all that, I'll be buying RX-51 as soon as it comes out. I've been thinking about picking up an extra n810 for the wife as it is for when teh home automation kicks in. Hopefully I can hold out long enough to just buy a RX-51 instead. Any hardware upgrades just make them more and more useful. Truely a product limited by our imagination. Hurray Open Source!

IMO, the biggest complaints about the n8x0's have little to do with hardware. They are mostly software deficiencies: slow browser, missing graphics driver, and last but certainly worst, sh*tty bloated websites. I ashamedly have yet to dive-in to the personalization xml file for the browser, but everyone should be using an ad-blocking /etc/hosts file as a minimum. An effective demonstration is engadget with and without said file. It can turn love into hate respectively.

I will be buying some kind of OMAP3 portable device, but I will forever hate giving software deficiencies a free ride. My n800 will always be welcome and respected in my house; Nokia deserves to be very proud of this one.

And how is that the fault of the N8x0? The perceived slowness is also a matter of expectations. handhelds will not be as fast and capable as desktop computers for some time to come, so if you're expecting that you will be disappointed.

I've had an N800 for about a year now and i use it all the time. Unfotunately it belongs to my employer and I will be retiring next May, so I'll probably have to give it up. I'll look at what's available in 6 months, but if I had to do it now, I would certainly buy an N8x0. The only dilemma is whether to stick with the N800 - it looks like you can't get then new any more - or go for the N810 in one of its flavors. I'm not real big on the slide-out keyboard even though I spend a lot of my time using hte Linux terminal window. I don't know it WIMAX is worth the extra money at this point either.

It will be hard to do without the RX-51 if it has video out and really looking forward to the processing performance upgrade so web pages render faster, but I will stay with my 800 (maybe buy an 810W) if the RX-51 goes for an minimalist, eye candy like "finger friendly" UI, and there is no longer the stylus and all the D-pad and HW buttons.

RX-51 may be only a internal testing product and maybe not the next tablet ... but RX-51 seems to use an OMAP3 ... so it ll be really faster.

maybe RX-51 is also only the beagleboard :)

I still have the 770 I bought in Dec. 2005, running OS2008HE. It is seldom used, mainly as a Maemo Mapper navigator on road trips as it is so sturdy and convenient.
Last year's N800 now stays at home, for quick Web access, multimedia with Canola, and as a test-bed for OS upgrades and new apps.
This year's N810 is the daily workhorse that follows me everywhere, because of its compacity, keyboard and screen (Web, webmail, RSS, ssh...).
When next year's N900 arrives I'll rethink my strategy :-)

Nah, RX-51 is the code for the release product. Whether it's more prototype devboard or release-quality at this point is unknown, though.

I bought my n810 a little while ago and I fully expect to use it for as long as the HW lasts. As a primary device, it may get replaced with something else, but the basic HW has so many different uses that I'm sure it will find a place in my life. I might even snap up a spare if the price drops low enough.

I expect the life cycle will be as follows:
- gingerly care for touch-screen and keep in an armored pouch.
- carry it around while travelling abroad, praying that it doesn't get damaged.
- leave it in the car glovebox as a GPS/OBD2 reader.
- hack it to be a part of some other electronics project.
- give it to a kid as a toy.

How soon it moves down the list depends on what new toys (for me) come out, and on my wife's gadget purchase tolerance ;)
