The installation file can be found here:

http://www.komputika.net/maemo/

(the file you need is: mc_4.6.1-2_armel.deb )

I can't remember what dependencies are needed for the program, but you can do what I usually do: run the installer and wait for error messages to come up (if any). I bet that, if any libraries are missing from your system, you can find them on the same site.

For additional information, go to

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006

and check out the comments on the Midnight Commander entry.

You might want to bookmark that last address...

Sorry to be such a pain but I installed it but cant see a sign of it anywhere! Is it supposed to appear under the tools menu or somewhere else or do I launch it from someplace else?

Many thanks
Ravi

you need to type 'mc' in xterm.

Karel Jansens 2006-08-18 12:19

Open Xterm and type "mc" (without the quotes), followed by <return>.

Midnight Commander is a console app and does not show up in the lists.

One caveat: you can navigate through mc's window with the cursor pad, but only the virtual keyboard's <return> key works for selecting stuff (the center button of the cursor pad turns the virtual keyboard on or off). I haven't tried mc with my bluetooth keyboard yet, so I don't know if that works. The menu options at the bottom of the mc screen can be selected with the stylus.

Also, the only way I know of to end mc, is by closing the Xterm window (the "x" in the top right corner).

Happy hacking.

WooHoo!
Got it to work and as if by magic, my eyes are not watering and bloodshot anymore. lol!

Many thanks

Thanks - Minimum Font Size = 14 works like a charm :)

:)

OK, since someone bumped this prehistoric thread back to top, I'd like to add something about Midnight Commander I only found out today:

It is possible to "properly" close mc without killing the Xterm. Normally, mc closes by hitting the F10 key, or by clicking the "F10" button on the screen. However, in normal zoom, the "F10" button doesn't show up on the 770/N800's screen; you have to unzoom to 80% to see it.

Oh, and click it to end the program, obviously...

Also, hitting the Escape key twice, then a number, emulates the corresponding function key (and esc-esc-0 is F10 :-)
