OK, now you have POP3 enabled for your gmail account.
The Authentication failed message means your username or password is wrong or you don't have the security set to SSL. Username should not contain "@gmail.com" Now go back to my original settings above (post #2) in this thread. |
I think I am going to give up. I changed everything per instruction on your post #2, and it still says Authentication failed. However, now I can send out mails. Still nothing coming in. Oh, well, I will just need to be happy to be able to send messages from my 770. Thanks for all your help.

Don't give up. Re-check your username and password.

Thanks for hanging with me. I have changed my username and password about 5 times, and all settings are exactly what your post #2 described. I still get "authentication to pop.gmail.com failed..." message.
Now if could go back to my post #9, it said I did not complete step 3 on my PC. Do you think this could be a problem? Again, I do not want "forwarded email", and that's why I did not complete step 3 on my PC. |
> Before changing #3 (configure email client) to Outlook which I use,
Item 3 on the "Forwarding and POP" page just leads to instructions, it doesn't change any settings. My 770's POP3 settings are User name: <my address including @gmail.com> Incoming Server: pop.gmail.com Security: SSL Incoming email port: 995 The gmail help says that you can use ports 465 or 587 for SMTP (hence the different suggestions), but 995 is the only one listed for POP3 retrieval. The help page also says "Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Gmail?" It doesn't help that mail clients sometimes confuse the terms TLS and SSL. I just checked and it worked now with the settings above. However, when I first set it up a few months ago, it didn't work simply because POP access was down (as I found when I tried using a mail client on a PC). |
It seems some of the settings are not critical as I tried settings of both Post #1 and #2. Both settings work for outgoing emails, but I cannot get it to work with incoming mail.
I will be glad to try everything as long as suggestions keep coming! Thanks to all making suggestions. |
You have to set up POP3 on your gmail account. It does not forward your email, it just allows you to read it with a pop3 client like outlook or the 770.

I too cannot get gmail to work on my 770. I have tried all of the settings mentioned here and continue to get the "authentication to pop.gmail.com failed" Could this be an issue w/ OS2006?
|
No, it's not an OS2006 issue.
I recommend you first get gmail (pop3) working on your PC using Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or some other POP3 client. Then you'll have all the settings you need for the 770. |
Did you get this working? I have the same problem. Everything works on my Treo but not my 770. Thanks
