You can get 1024x600 (or 1000x600, same aspect ratio as 800x480) in pocket-sized LCDs these days, see for example the Sony UX280P or the Sharp Netwalker (which aren't pocketable for other reasons).

I cann see this possible with a device the same size as the N810. A tilting screen would be really nice too.

Leaving aside whether standardising on something so limited is a good idea, they don't seem to have done a very good job at it: the N900 and N97mini symbol layouts are completely different so there's no benefit to a user swapping between the devices.

Peter Schneider mentioned something about standardising to a three-line keyboard in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYrSv2pA95o

Thanks pelago. Yes, that's the reference I had in mind. Here's what Peter said:

Across our portfolio we wanted to introduce one way of having keyboards, so that people, whenever they pick up a Nokia device of a similar form factor, they actually get the same kind of keyboard.
So I don't think we're going to see 4-row and 5-row keyboards on this class of Nokia device any time soon.

Roger

Cheaper than unlocked n900, around 300-400 dollars new.

Same hardware, possibly same size/shape/keyboard of n810 would be nice.

I'm probably in the minority, but I rather liked the n900 keypad. It's nice and sensitive, and to me the small space bar is perfectly placed. I even like its tilting slide. If only it wasn't symbian...

Do you mean the N97 perhaps? The N900 runs Maemo, and its keyboard isn't tilting.

I'd like a device like this:
http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/00...t_by_chris.htm

Add Maemo 5/6 support, a portrait T9 keypad, and a dpad on the face of the device. I've had this dream for awhile now. Anyone able to help me refine my design or have any questions/criticism about the form factor?

  • Pocketable but can be fat - prefer performance to small/light-weight
  • At least 4.1" screen
  • A good battery to better handle Flash
  • At least 250 MB RAM
  • Faster hardware; e.g., 800 mHz CPU
  • Fast SD card memory with lots of room to install a lot of apps ( had to hack my n800 to do so)
  • The pop-out, 180-degree rotatable camera that the n800 has, but with good resolution and
  • Keep support for Skype
  • Slide-out keyboard
  • Two options for Web browser: Both Khtml-based Midori in a finished state, and a finished Fennec
