Re: Request: Nokia Maps alternative for Maemo 5

Is there any chance of the maps software from OS2008 coming to N900 many of use paid for the 3 years of service and it would be nice to transfer that to the n900.

I agree... But I originaly paid for a "lifetime" license.

Also, service implies support. There has been no real updates or enhancements to the very stale GUI since I purchased it in May of 2007

I'm hoping that an increased customer base with the N900 will lead to:

1. More user defined plug-ins for gnuite's most excellent FOS MaemoMapper.

2. A more responsive software vendor like Garmin or TomTom will provide a more robust, fee based software.

A brief look at dpkg-repack on "maps" showed that there'd be issues around the GPS interface changing. However, a stub libgpsbt which bridged to the Fremantle APIs wouldn't be out of the reason of possibility.

Well, Ovi Maps probably has offline maps using SVG. But since there is 3G Maemo Mapper is now a more interesting alternative. Ofcourse you pay for turn-by-turn navigation. There is no free, good alternative for that.

My understanding was that it wasn't available at all, I don't mind paying for turn by turn, is it available as well?

Navit has been awesome for me, it's free and can be adapted to your needs.

I'd be happy having:

http://www.navit-project.org/

On it :) Even does TTS for turn by turn. As for POI. I generally don't follow those much ;)

So your saying its possible to load Os2008 Maps on Fremantle if some work was done. I really think it should be done since alot of us paid out big time for that navigation.

YoDude: Well UI hasn't changed which I don't mind much its a simple program but it works. Atleast we did get new maps last year.
