Sad to see there is not going to be a lot of apps for N900 at launch.

N900 is turning out to be hacker tool much like the N810. Android has been around for a relatively short period but yet has a wealth of apps. Nokia will have to carry the can apps wise as was the case in N810 - built in apps are decent. Maemo developers are great at System level coding but not so good at UI level. N900 is a great great device but shame about application developer support. It may not go mainstream due to this shortcoming. I hope I'm wrong for Nokia's sake.

How many applications did the iPhone have at launch? Or Android? webOS? Give it a month or two.

Actually..

Can't the n900 already run Maemo 4 apps from the get go? Though it wouldn't be optimized.

What do I care. If the browser is good as advertised then I'm sold. Though I want this device to go big mainstream. Fingers crossed.

Depends on the app (e.g., Maemo Mapper wont work due to changes in the location framework), most of them should be OK, though.

OK, so there's a command line I can use in the N900 for these apps? Pardon my ignorance.

Can anyone also give some info on which of these clients work on the N900? Do they just port and work from other Nokia phones?

MSN messenger
AIM
Skype

???

Skype is built-in, MSN and AIM support is in the testing stage so not available by default but a few simple instructions enables them.

The beauty is that they are plugins for the IM system so appear built-in to the OS once installed. I believe you just add them to your contacts and it will show if they are online/offline, very neat.

Or you can use a standalone app like Pidgin if you prefer. (though I can't remember if that has been ported over yet)
