Just tried an .flv format video file, but it didn't play, and asked me which app to use to play it, but selecting either Media player, or Ogg version, said codec missing?

That would be mplayer territory. No front-end for in in Maemo 5 yet, though.

I have downloaded kmplayer, but that don't even player, and can't find a player by the name of "mplayer" in resporities

Appreciate the effort but it's not that easy. You have no separate CPU/DSP load indicator, so you don't know how much power the DSP is using and the overall result is the sum of the two: value + unknown = unknown :) Maybe if we had access to that super-funky power usage meter, some meaningful results could be produced, but this way it's mostly eyeballing/guesswork.

I believe it's currently in extras-devel. If you did not have that repository enabled, then it's probably a good idea to keep it that way and wait for an official release :)

Mm, true but the DSP should run on less energy then the cpu core or am I wrong?

It would be perhaps more precise to say it gives you more multimedia performance per consumed energy unit.

Anyhow, the point is, since AFAIK you can't directly measure DSP power consumption, you can't compare how different bitrates and codecs compare efficiency-wise (except looking at battery levels, which is a very crude measure).

Re: what video settings the N900 uses?

This may have already been worked out by most people but i'll add my experience anyway.

First off i use - Sony Vegas Pro to render or convert my video's, (usually music vids off youtube) although i'm sure you could use any program to do the same job.

Video

I use MP4 Video format
800X480 resolution
H.264 codec
25 Frames per second

Audio
AAC Audio format
44,100 Sample rate
192kbps Bit rate
Stereo

The next bit depends on what quality/file size you want,
I was using a 4 minute music video

1000kbps Reasonable quality - small file size e.g. 27MB
2000kbps Good quality - medium file size e.g. 50MB
3000kbps Very good quality - large file size e.g. 77MB (I USE THIS ONE)
4000kbps Excellent quality - massive file size e.g. 104MB

I have tried all four on my N900 and have noticed that if i play a 4000kbps video, my N900 stops playing and crashes randomly, so i use 3000kbps which negates crashes and delivers very good video quality. To be honest, i did'nt notice a difference between 3 & 4K.

Here is a screen grab of my settings which work best for me.

Re: what video settings the N900 uses?

a player that has played everything i throw on my N900 so far is VLC Player (does the same on the PC, playing everything. Like, if you put a Salami in your CD Drive, it will play *something*)

But it always uses full CPU Speed on my N900, even when just playing back MP3s it goes to 950 Mhz.

What about WebM, does the N900 support it in the Mediaplayer? Think it should.
