Re: Goodbye N900

Well. the main reason for me why I wanna buy an N900 is:
Mobile Freedom! I could make Skype calls on my N900 over 3G, watch Divx movies, go on flash pages and have Firefox on there. You'd have less choice, yes, but the apps available for Maemo just suit my needs better! I don't need 100000 fart apps, but maybe a TI-83 Emulator, which would be more useful to me!
The iPhone is like a toy, but the N900 is a real pocketable computer.

Oh well, thats just my opinion. There is no perfect smartphone for everybody! If the iPhone appeals to you more, go ahead and be happy!

Additionally, the iPod is always available in the background.

I don't miss anything like multi-tasking. But this is individual preference, I admit

Within 5 minutes of having my N900 I had SSH'ed into it. That alone makes this phone worth having to me :)

Hey all you maemo enthusiasts,

just want to say goodbye to N900 and maemo. I was really thinking about buying one, but luckily, I got my iphone 2 weeks ago.

For me the situation is quite simple:
- Nokia did a really, really bad job concerning product communication (here I mean the announcment of a release date, not any product marketing - have you seen any?)
- The iphone is (for me) better anyhow (what counts for my daily mobil use: thinner, low weight, no mechanical degrees of freedom)

Well, if a spend several hundred bucks for a smartphone, I want a up to date product . The iphone is now ahead all smartphones I checked so far. Design, Interface and, well take a look at the AppStore, the choice IS impressing.

I wish you a early delivery - hopefully before the iphone 4G is out ;)

Heh, See Ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!

I'm a bad person. I like threads like this because they give me hope that I'll be able to land an n900 for under $300 before March.

The problem with jailbreaking is every Apple update puts you back at square one unless you wait for the jailbreaking team to catch up (granted it doesn't take them to long). Then the applications on the iPhone can occasionally be designed around using the full capacity of the iPhone's resources since that's what Apple provides developers. Multi-task with that and your going crash. Of course the same thing would happen on the n900 (trying to multi-task with several heavy applications).

I agree that Nokia did a terrible job (and they still are right now). But it's a good thing I don't consider the n900 a smartphone or it would be the best smartphone out there right now (well for me). Though with the front I consider it on (a mobile handheld computer) there's competition and the n900 isn't exactly the best one out there on that front.

Edit: I'd like to point out that the iPhone does multi-task. It's just Apple limits what it can multi-task. For example, I believe you can use the media player and browser at the same time. Going from the media player to the browser doesn't pause the music.

If I want to switch to an application, I just switch to it, and the previous one is still doing what I left it to do (downloading, streaming, calculating, etc).

No offense, and as I said, have fun, but I really find... strange... that after all this time, and iPhone can't still do what any Maemo (or S60 handset) has been doing since years ago...
