clearly none of us would mind an applet quick launch on the desktop...

I've had good luck with the Maemo Word Processor, a.k.a. AbiWord 2.2.7,
Maemo Word Processor, a.k.a. AbiWord 2.2.7 -

Its got some bugs, (without the bluetooth keyboard, once you use the full screen touch keys, you can't get back the on-screen smaller keys without restarting the program...read the thread) and isn't as polished as Etrunko's excellent Gnumeric port, but I regularly load and save Word .doc files and file share through gmail.

I have excellent productivity with my broken, spanish language thinkoutside stowaway keyboard, and can do all I ever need with it. It is a bit laggy, but solid enough for real use. All standard formatting is there. The Gnumeric port is extremely fast for data entry with the bluetooth keyboard.

Novell's web client for my school is fast enough for me to do attendance, detention logs (with gnumeric), email and file sharing (either through Novell or Gmail) and web browsing via google's personalized desktop through my HSDPA LG-cu500 phone.

It streams radio anywhere, holds a charge all day, and loads topo, road, or satellite maps to your location or anywhere else with maemo mapper.

I am wondering why retailers can't in-stock the N770 anymore. I'd buy another one if I could find it, because my brother in law wrote "stars", that cool stargazing program recently ported to maemo. How much cooler could a N870 or whatever be???! :D

my completely frivolous wish app?

Karaoke!! surely the 770 can handle the simple text file(.cdg) that comes with an .mp3 inside of a mp3+g package. The big screen is perfect for it. MP3+g is easily found on usenet, you can make em from your own karaoke discs.

I don't criticize the current Abiword port, although I religeously refrain from blue/red pill tinkering, but I find I just don't need it anymore. I do need a good WIMP-editor (although, if it doesn't come soon, I might take a shot at learning vim).

Again, Gnumeric is a beauty, but -- excusez le mot -- it really sucks as a flatfile database.

Was that the same Data application as on the 5/5mx? If so I'd like to vote for a port (copy) of that as well, very handy little db...

Of course we do have sqllite but no simple gui for it that I'm aware of, and I'm sure an rdbms even a simple one like this is overkill for most users..

Application

I would like to see an application that manages the respoitory lists. Something that can go out and download all working respositories at that moment. I am sick of having to turn off repositories because they are down at some moment in time. Then I have to remember to go back and turn them on to test and see they are back on.

This would also eliminate manual entering of respoitories.

Am I just crazy, does anyone else see a need for this?

I just learned that Scite was again available for the 2006 OS, in the Garage. Have you tried it ? It's intended as a code editor, but is also a very competent general-purpose text editor. And less painful than vim :-)

Well... yes and no. I believe the engine was more or less the same as in the Series 3xx, but the UI had been "beautified". Alas, IMHO not to its advantage. Then again, Data in the Series 3xx was optimized for keyboard use (amazingly optimized, even), so maybe I'm letting my extensive experience with the venerable 3a cloud my judgement of the 5mx.

The thing is, many users will have sqllite installed anyway, as part of another program, so this migt probably the way to go. It's not because the engine is relational, that you cannot build a nice and simple flatfile frontend.

Intriguing. You've got my interest there. If you can point me to precise programming information for the MP3+G and CDG formats, I'll take a look at implementing this.

I tried SciTe and found it utter cr*p. I commented on it in the editor-thread.
