I think the over laying buttons would look better. it would give it a sense of animation. It wold be more interesting to look at

Maybe a bit late, but you can use a picture as an avatar through the image gallery. If tanslating directly from my swedish version, it should say "use as avatar" when you choose a picture, and then press the settings tab at the top.

Is there a brainstorm or enhancement bug filed on this already? I couldn't find one, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
