That's a big reason for me, plus I'd like to see what they would like on my N900.

720p video works flawlessly on the pandora (same hardware) so I don't see why the N900 wouldn't be able to playback 720p files...

I'll look into that next week.

Re: HD Video Codecs for Nokia N900?

to be honest... video performance (right now) sucks very hard.
i don't need HD-playback because the screen resolution isn't even HD (800 * 480) as mentioned few times before.

but what's driving me crazy is the fact that i have got many .avi and .x264/.h264 videos created as a compromise between resolution, bitrate and of course filesize.
so mostly they have around 700 * 350 px and between 1200 and 2000 kbps on video-side and around 300 kpbs 5.1 ac3 on audio-side.

i tested to remove the audio completely to see if afterwards the performance isn't that bad anymore. but audio doesn't seem to be this important for bad/good playback.

i have to say that most of the .avis are playing just fine but it's horrible to see the .x264 lagging around with the audio playing normal speed and the video getting more and more way behind in every second of "watching" this.

in my opinion my video-encodings with the settings mentioned above should play smooth on a device like the n900. there is some work to do - especially for the built-in player on nokia's side.

Is it just for the convenience of not having to re-encode your HD content before you can watch it on the N900? I just don't see any other reason..

That's one reason, HD being a marketing word being the other.

to anyone not wanting to reencode HD content - Knots 2 is no solution for you?

and regarding the Omnia HD - it's just about the buzzword.
it doesn't do HD on the screen, it can push 720p content via DLNA to a suitable player, but even that doesn't work as advertised:

Anyways, in regards to DLNA streaming FROM the phone -- it's not what they make it out to be in the advertisement. When streaming 720p videos, even on the best network conditions available (ie. phone is 5 inches away from the wifi router and the server running xbmc is connected to the router via gigabit ethernet and there's NO other network traffic [lol]) there will be buffering and lag.

mhm... not really, sorry...

i want to have my videos (and they aren't hd but playback doesn't work smoothly as it should be anyway...) on my phone. i want to have them with me everywhere i go. therefore streaming is fine at home but no solution for the weak video playback of the n900...

actually, i don't consider the video capabilities of the N900 weak at all. i've thrown files >1 GB at it, and didn't notice any lag whatsoever.

the occasional video won't work or start to stutter, but those are usually files in a strange encoding format.
i see it as a kind of screening process - files that don't play on the N900 are usually encoded so badly that it does make sense to reencode them :)
but maybe i'm just lucky that most of my vids are encoded well ;)

file size doesn't matter. the file could be 10GB large and played without any problems. ^^

mhm... i would say that my videos are encoded very well. they even look good on a 42" full-hd with that (actually) low resolution.

that's the point ;)

avis play very well on the n900, but the specs state that the n900 should play h264 videos as well. and yeah... equal resolution, bitrate.... all the same... but avis play smooth and h264 doesn't...

ok... the codec does more compressing etc... and therefore the playback needs more power... but i can't understand why my files are lagging... :/

maybe that's the problem. some codecs use a lot of post-processing to eliminate artifacts for upscaling. i imagine such a codec isn't suited for this device.

Re: HD Video Codecs for Nokia N900?

Personally, I'd be very interested in such codec, especially if I could play with them with gstreamer. I'd also be very interested if I could send HD out the video port. With that, I would be interested in exploring if an n900 could function nicely as a Roku like device.
