maemo.org - Talk - Removing unnecessary files on N810

Okay... this is my own personal method for removing a lot of unwanted/unnecessary flies on my N810. This isn't perfect, there's quite a few tweaks that I use also with the browser and other stuff - all pretty much taken from Brontide (see first post in this thread for the link to that thread) or other threads here at TMO - and came up with the following just for space. Speed tweaks are different and not really listed here...

Per usual, your results (mileage) might vary (YMMV) and this is just a routine that I've created over the last couple of years of owning my N810 and I tend to do this when I'm bored or want to reflash my N810 because I got too adventurous with some of the (then) newer apps on this site. No more updates, no more stuff to try other than DialCentral.

I start with the following Application Catalogs:

Then install pretty much in this order:

Then start with removing things...

root

rm *install -r

note: This step kills the gizmo, skype and rhapsody installers - saves very little space.

cd /usr/share/applications/hildon

rm voip*
rm rhap*
rm osso_rss*
rm osso_help*
rm osso-global*
rm bookma*
rm giz*
rm hwr*
rm osso-addr*
rm modest*
rm chat*

note: My install is a bit different, but I tend to not use Rhapsody, Search and a few others since some are duplicated in the main icons (Contacts, New Internet Call, New Chat, New E-mail for instance. Bookmarks can be accessed via the Web icon too)

cd /usr/share/applications/hildon-home

rm promo*

note: Reminder, this is my typical install, feel free to ignore these deletions outside of the Rhapsody, Skype and Gizmo desktop files.

Then I use localepurge & docpurge to get rid of some locales on programs and files that I'd never use. Install in this order:

note: Mine were on my external memory card in a folder named Downloads

cd /media/mmc1/Downloads
dpkg -i pcregrep_6.7-1osso1_armel.deb
dpkg -i color_ls_1.0-1_armel.deb
dpkg -i libpcre3_6.7-1osso1_armel.deb
dpkg -i localepurge_0.5.8_all.modfied.modfied.deb

run: localepurge && docpurge

This setup assumes that you are using US-EN - EN_US. If you're using something else as your default language use this:

note: I tend to disable Metalayer-crawler because it tends to get stuck sometimes, eats up RAM and battery juice.

update-rc.d metalayer-crawler remove

note: this will remove the ability of the Media Player from auto-recognizing/autoload into Library recently uploaded files - I just click the ones I want to load as I wish to anyway.

note: I use only the echo.desktop, so I remove all other *.desktop except default.desktop and echo.desktop. I also do not ever use the standard backgrounds. Again, YMMV

note: Extra removals - I don't suggest these fully, but I tend to these anyway

cd /usr/share/keyboards

note: I remove all but: en_US.vkb, latin.special.vkb and en_GB.vkb

cd /usr/share/locale/

note: I remove all but: en@boldquot, en_CA, en_GB, en@quot, and en_US

cd /usr/share/osso-help

note: I remove all but: en_US, en_GB and graphics here

cd /usr/share/themes

note: I remove all but: echo, Emacs, default and Default here

This method will save you about 26mb before disabling all of the aforementioned Application Catalogs, around 33mb or so after disabling all of the Application Catalogs - Extras-Devel is the biggest culprit.

But that's my quick method to update and rid my machine of unused space. I tend to do more than this, but this is the quick and easy method. The other tweaks are just... well, because I don't know any better.

I hope this helps just a little. And would love to see more space tweaks added. I do tend to stay around the few areas that have historically not been volatile for me.
