The stuff after the ":" is not a port number (as is usually the case after a ":" in a URL) but rather some sort of server display instance number ... that does happen to map to a real port. The first server instance usually gets assigned :0 and usually listens on port 5900/tcp. The second server gets display :1 and listens on port 5901/tcp and so on. You can run typically a maximum 64 of displays on the same machine but I think there are ways to extend this.

This is useful to know if you want to tunnel VNC through SSH ... which is very possible on the Nokia IT with both the OpenSSH and VNC app installed.

I'm not familiar with GotomyPC or Logmein, but in any case, VNC isn't specific to the N800. You can get VNC clients for your PC at home as well. I would suggest that you try that first--there is documentation at realvnc.com that may be of assistance. If you can get VNC working from your home PC to your office PC, then this means that you may be able to get it to work from the N800 as well.

VNC is used for that same sort of purpose but it is more for use in networks where you have control over a bit of the infrastructure between server and client (i.e. within a LAN or over a VPN) as it has no built-in encryption AFAIK and does not traverse NAT firewalls without some sort of help ... two very important things for free-range remote access to your desktop.

GotomyPC is java based, so doesn't work with the N800. I suppose I'm basically sol on trying to use the N800 for this use. Thx for the help.

Well, there is work ongoing to get some java on the tablet OS so you may not be SOL forever. There is also work on getting C#/Mono working on the tablet so that might be another option in the future.

You are not necessarily SOL regardless. It just takes some work to get a tunnel established for VNC to run through. Sometimes that work is more hassle than just doing things some other way (like lugging your laptop or using corporate webmail/file access).

Unfortunately, there is no rubber-stamp solution for you.
