@lq_sunshine the proof of this will be in the pudding.

@cashclientel i don't want to proove it yet, because i like the n900 so much. i have since 5 days.

I think that the things that save the energy are the 125 mhz idle clock.
and the turned of wifi (hardware unloaded from kernel).

For people wo dont want to risc overclocking there should be
a 125 - 600mhz Kernel file (125/250/500/550/600) without overclocking the dsp.Maybe someone will develope it...
the stock kernel doesn't support 125 Mhz yet :-(

Has anyone already reported a bug to support 125 - 600mhz Kernel file (125/250/500/550/600) without overclocking?

More or less - https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7116

As this used to be enabled in pre-release kernels but was dropped for the release version, I rather doubt Nokia will re-enable it.

Nokia will never re-enable 125mhz as it is too risky. The pitfalls are obvious and the gains are non-existent from their POV

Then someone will write one up to allow 125MHz idling mode. May be OC it to 650MHz clock and low it down to 125Mhz. I think OC to 650MHz will not shorten the cpu's life as much as the 800MHz+ OC.

Can anyone confirm?

Wait, isn`t the Lehto 125/900 kernel using idle speeds of 125mhz?Is there a bug that doesn`t allow the phone to idle to 125?Cause conky reports that it idles fine at 125....Am I missing something?

It's all about the heat. As far as I understand, the megahertz themselves can't hurt silicon.

So assuming that the cpu produces more heat at 800Mhz than at 650Mhz, you're correct.

You can do all this by using one of titans kernals, see the overclocking wiki, it will explain everything you need to know, im currently using the "ideal" kernel with min of 500mhz and max set at 1000mhz but all the other kernals range from 125-1200, although they start at default 250-600 (i believe) untill you set the frequency you want.
Hope this helps :)
