I didn't say it's bad. i'm advising ubuntu to all people who wants linux and don't want to configurate it and learn it in more deep way. i'm saying the population of linux users can influence in a bad way as well. when people come and expect everything to work and they ask questions instead of 1 minute google use. i'm just saying populating something is not always the best thing

Ubuntu 10.04's pretty nice with the social integration (Empathy, Evolution, Gwibber).

All your alter egos in a couple square inches (or a few square centimeters).

I just can't seem to convert any of my friends because they're all gaming addicts... (And most of their games don't work well in wine.)

I've been a part-Linux, part-Windows user for the past year or so, and the last nail in the coffin for Windows came when one of the essential .dlls got corrupted. Tried to re-install Windows and everything, but then the sound drivers wouldn't work.

Funny how I learned more about computers in a year than the library technicians (oh the irony...) at my school have all their career.

My friend (http://lincomlinux.org/homepage) and I were writing the .spec files for the base system one day, and one of the technicians accused us of hacking the school computers. (Even though there are quite advanced C++ and Java courses here, too.).

Basically, people need to know about Linux. Just knowledge of what Linux is (even if all they know is that it's an alternate OS to Windows and Mac) would brighten the technology world greatly, in my opinion.

Hope Chrome OS can facilitate this effect.

I disagree with the Chrome OS, its the worse OS ive evere tried. I would rather have DOS on my computer than Chrome OS, its JUST a bootable internet browser, NOTHING more. It can be useful to have it installed for googling if your computer OS dies. Thats about it. Anyway, Lynx web browser can run in dos too :P

Well if some people think its cool and hip, then I wont refuse them running such an OS :P

What I meant by "facilitate," is to spread the word about Linux (Google being one company that everyone knows of). Honestly, I don't think Chrome OS is revolutionary either. Just an idea that many have thought of, but never tried, because it's simply too vague.

That user running Windows Vista with a slow old computer might also want to try Win7.

Hi Siggen. Thanks for replay, but your assumption is wrong :)
I'm building my PC's always myself. I know how computers works from electric circuits point of view. All those 3 steps I know but good you put this here someone can might find it useful.

Also I know from theory and architecture what the Linux is and differences between Windows. I have knowledge about file systems and I always agree that Unix based Linux is the winner from programmer point of view.

However, because of tools I had to use from many years I hade to use Windows. I was giving chance my self many times to install some Linux distribution. Windows made me disabled no because lack of knowledge but because I get use to. Each time when I had Linux set up and running... ( I remember my first was RedHat with KDE i think). i was struggling and messing around with commands to install even simple things. It made mi impatient and finally I gave up. Even if something was working it was easy to stuck on very simple task like fix your missing driver or something.

Basically Linux for person like me with a bit more knowledge wasn't OS that could teach me. You had to know everything is needed to learn Linux.That's why Windows won.

Maemo Linux based - cool. Do I have to think here to do something? No!
It's very straight forward. Do I know how to use x Terminal? No! I don't now the commands and how it works under the hood.

Now I am playing with easy debian on N900. I love it. I can behave like normal user on it. But my enthusiasm ends when I need to dig deeper.

The bigger problem with linux is, has been developed by hi-end programmers for themselves. They made it beauty for guys with knowledge on their level. Completely useless for normal people. Things are getting better and better but very often different way as customers getting use to new versions of Windows and OSX. Sorry for this opinion I don't want hurt anybody and I have full respect to this guys. Especially when during my life I evolved from designer to developer.

But in your genius programming minds you miss human-interaction aspect and usability. Stuff usually looks ugly and not user friendly. Since doing system for yourself you can love it and die for it doesn't mean someone else can. Why there is so many different distributions of Linux?. Because you even can't agree between each other.
Don't be surprise that only you.

And I'm sorry to see that even here programmers are divided. Some do like Qt MeeGo some doesn't because it's against the beauty of clear programming. I am not taking side here still this is above my range.
But if you want to keep Maemo for yourself will die with you same way as you Killed Linux popularity some time ago when was big opportunity to compete with Windows on the market.

You have great opportunity to make Linux happen on the mobile computing now. This is new decade and new chance. I really love this OS mostly because is close to ideology I've being always big supporter, what Open Source suppose be. Don't f** it up. Learn from the past. Join your forces rather doing OS for yourself again.

At the moment from my short period of observation is not good. So much ego games taking place here. You want to prove one to each other who is better programmer and have more experience. If someone new will show up, first of all kill him by attacking his skills and destroy his respect. Is that how you programmers created Linux some time ago? Wow...

I'll keep that in mind. Will be co-developing a new distribution sometime next year alongside a fellow Linux enthusiast friend. (Right now it's very geeky: lincomlinux.org)

I have been a Windows user since Windows 3.1.

I had previously dabbled with Ubuntu, but only using the live CD on my main PC and tested on spare PCs.

My main PC running Win 7 died recently, but was bought back to life with a new PSU. At the same time I found a P4 PC a neighbour had discarded and put a 1TB HD in with the intention of running it as my torrent box and media server, while using my Win 7 PC as my main rig.

I installed Ubuntu on the torrent box and since then have had no reason to start up the Windows machine.

Using the N900 was another incentive for me to start embracing Linux and I am happy I made the switch. There have been no tasks I have been unable to perform with Ubuntu and love the idea and concept of 'open source' operating systems (and software).

It does take a bit of learning a new way of doing things, but it's very satisfying to do.

Win 7 still runs on my laptop, and I still love the OS, but now I know I don't have to rely on it anymore.

Chrome OS Is not good. I think that the worry of what data is going to Google (and what they are doing with it) scares me a bit. However (never used it), it would be a good idea to see just how well it operates (and what applications it facitiates) OFFLINE. Without data able to get through to Google.
