They are totally different, it depends what do you need, all-in-one Internet tablet, or a smart-phone. Spec wise iPhone is better. I prefer my N900 over the iPhone because of the hardware keyboard,and free Skype video calls.(Skype > FaceTime) if you don't need that you should get iPhone NOW, or wait for some Meego device. P.S. The DroidX is cool IMHO, not too pocketable, but i love big, hi-res capacitive screen.

I agree with something i read on here yesterday - If your wondering which device you should get, between an iphone and an n900, you should get an iphone.

iPhone is the better smartphone. N900 is the better linux pocketable computer.

Get N900 if this is important for you:
- Supporting opensource movement.
- Legal and conceptual freedom to do anything on your device (but you may not necessarily be able to do some of them because of limitations in apps/tools/skills/3rd party support).
- Near complete access to everything in your phone.

Get iPhone if the following is important for you:
- If you want things to 'just work' with less tinkering.
- Great 3rd party support. Sites and apps basically are storming your way, wanting your attention/money (heh).
- Good interoperability with Windows or OSX machine.

Word. The iPhone wasn't even on my list. If a dude is considering iPhone then they should probably just dive in and join the flock without thinking about it too much.

If I was looking for a new phone right now, iPhone still wouldn't be on my list and I'd be weighing up how urgent my need was against the wait for the N9, or at least the N8 with a keyboard. But the thing is, the HW keyboard is only the half of it because I really like the accuracy of a resistive screen.

In practice, when buying tech products it usually pays off to wait and if I was looking for a new 'smartphone' today, I think I would hold fire on the N900 for now and wait to see what happens with N9 / N8 with keyboard. If I don't like what I see when these phones hit the market the N900 would be so near end of line that it could be picked up for peanuts. I am looking for a new phone for the wife, but she has a whole different set of criteria to me - battery life being high on the list - which is why the N8 is on my radar right now.

if you like doing complicated things in lunix to get your n900 to work sort of, get it. but if you want a fully supported phone with cool apps and a nice experience get ipone or an android phone.
i've had the n900 since day one and still waiting for it to be finished and looks like ot never will be.there's a great comunity around the n900 working hard to develope it but its a shame nokia isn't doing the same.

I totally agree, tell us what you want from a phone and we can better answer you question.

howver i can give you my take on it.

I have a N900 and my GF has a iphone4, they are vastly different. I must admit i loved the iphone4, it is a very good phone. I also love my n900 and kept trying to get the iphone into portait mode (I never thought i would prefer this EVER).

The multitasking on the iphone from my experience is poor compared to the N900. The double tap solution doesn't always work, there may be a better way but i didnt no it at the time.i found i would accidentally close an application by accident when i went to double tap.
The camera of the iphone IMO wipes the floor with the n900. it takes nice photos once u get used to the holding the device PERFECTLY still and i mean perfectly still. The video again is immense.

The screen is crazy im not a massive specs person so dont no if teh difference is massively different on paper but the iphone is ver good. sharp images and the colours are very vibrant. That is not to say the N900 has a rubbish screen because it has a very very good screen as well.
Lots of people on this board talk about how closed Apple is. I have only had a brief take on this owning an ipod and having to convert everything. However after ten minutes of using the iphone i wanted to through it out the window. UI are so restricted its untrue. My GF couldnt figure out how to get a ringtone on. she is not the most technically minded person so thought it was her being an idiot :P

U would think it was right click file (something similar) and use as ringtone. NOPE. i went online i found 12 steop guides on how to make your own ring tone. i was not impressed at all. i later found u can download apps to help but like i said i wanted to through the phone out the window
On the other hand i got one of the most customizable phones out and to be honest i have barel changed a thing. Im a user that doesnt use the n900 to its fullest ability at all but still love the phone

Get iphone 4g if you want a phone with a piss poor antenna design. At least the antenna on the N900 wasn't designed by *****s.
