Is it possible to buy an LTE handset and use it on a network without the carrier sticking their nose in your business like it is with GSM?

Well, that is more about carrier policy, but yes LTE on verizon will use sim cards, hopefully making 'unlocked' and sim swapping between devices more prevalent there
