Someone's bound to see a money spinning loophole and p*ss on the bonfire.

Once production starts, which would undoubtedly have to be outsourced, and demand for the device increases, taking with it the demand for components, extra workforce staff and shipping/distribution costs, the cost to the end user must surely rise dramatically.

My immediate thought to the title was the OLPC netbook and indeed it is mentioned in the article. It's part publicity by shock.

Well, the OLPC did not really succeed (99$ PC etc), but it does bring the price of laptop down and started the idea of netbook, at least I would credit to. Maybe the $35 tablet is a publicity shot, but there are already several tablet/wifi in the neigborhood of $70 - $99 at dealextreme, and old NIT are also selling under $50 in ebay. I think the gini is out.... literally

Well, but India IS producing and selling incredibly cheap new cars. This is one of the things happening in the world that we don't understand very well. People are making things very cheaply for people who don't have much money. This is one thing that Nokia DOES seem tuned in to.

Nokia 'C' (cheap?) series phones seem to cater to such audience.

I for one am looking forward to this. Android based disposable tablet. I will buy 10 on release if they can maintain the price point. That way I can have a little web browser in every room of the house (and at that price point, probably every cupboard too).
