i wouldnt recommend the n900,lots of problem around nokia support and very little apps.

the desire with the new update allows you to put apps on the sd card. but as it is so new it will take some time for developers to configure thier apps to be able to transfer them to the sd card

Ya, totally. The guy that told you that you'd have to be a geek to use the N900 (or something like that) isn't right at all. U don't. Of COURSE u DON'T need to learn how to code to use the phone, all its basic functions are there and u'll have no problem using it. It's just like using any other phone. The problem is, is that the phone itself is not fully developed/completed. You should do more research on this, but basically N900 uses the operating system called Maemo 5, and it's not the end-of-the-line product.

Basically, it's like saying Windows Vista is a total piece of crap, but Windows 7 is awesome. If you understand this, then it's the same thing. Windows 7 is basically the completed version of Windows Vista. But they still released Vista despite it being a total crap, that's a total different discussion from a business's standpoint but anyway, it's not a completed product.

Maemo 5 is the same, it's not crap, but it's certainly not the finished product. The finished product will be called Meego (Maemo 6). Maybe i'm wrong, apparently some people said that the final product will be Maemo 7 or something, but anyway it's a fact that Maemo 5 isn't finished, and so there're still some firmware updates that are needed to address some of the major problems of this phone. Of course, it's still very much usable, just that Nokia dropped the majority of support for this phone and will only be concentrating on Meego now.


So if you don't mind this, get it. Otherwise, don't. Iphone has much better support, even from warez forums themselves. Also, jailbreaking unlocks more potential on the iPhone, you can install tweaks to multi-task even better on the iPhone, so you can run more than 1 app of course, and definitely run 3rd party apps in multi-tasking as well. Hell, i can do this on my iPod Touch (jailbroken) and it multi-tasks better than all my other friend's iPhone, which are not jailbroken.


Anyway, most ppl are here are pros in fixing a few issues with the phone and adding new features/tweaks to it. You don't have to be like them, but it's easy to follow their instructions to apply those things to your phone.



But it's better if you list the exact features that you use your phone for, this way others can give you a better advice. Personally, i suggest you get the iPhone 4, or even an Android like the HTC Evo 4G, or Nexus One. If you're really REALLY low on budget, get a Windows Mobile like the HTC Touch Pro 2, the support for Windows Mobile is still far better than Maemo (N900).

I would vote for iphone4 but after it turned my cousin to be a denial dickhead****tard the moment he is holding this forbidden iSatin4, after that I've changed my mind to vote on my N900 instead.

I read Meego isnt officially supported by Nokia for the N900.. it is community-based. Of course i believe the active community here will do a good job, but wouldnt it be nice for Nokia to support it ?:(

What i want from a phone: ( a rough guideline ? )

Music and videos
Internet browsing
multi-tasking ( i usually open at least 4 apps on my N86 currently )
Gaming

I´d say that the few minutes you took to write that post including that "lame question" (quote) could have been used to fire up google or use the sesrch engine on this site. It´s exactly the reason why I would NOT advice you to get an N900. It is beyond my comprehension why you´d post a question you yourself consider to be lame despite of having thought about not doing so.

ya that's what i mean by Nokia dropping the majority of its support for N900. They 99% most likely won't release Meego on it. They did announce they WON'T be releasing Meego for it, and apparently ppl said they changed their mind again, i'm not so sure but as far as i know, it's not confirmed atm and i'm assuming most likely not. You can only ever get so far with a community like this, we'll see how long we can survive but after using so many different phones for so long, i have a feeling that it's not gonna do too well, at least it's not gonna show any major development growth or improvement. Hell, when i was still using my Sony Ericsson W950i running UIQ3, i went through the entire 2 years watching it die. I tweaked that phone to the max, hacked it so much, and seen so many users left it. Eventually, SE sold the license or dropped it, and now it's open source but practically dead. The community still lingers on till this day, with 4 or 5 members left. That was 3 years ago btw, it's probably fully dead by now lol.


Well, u really can't use N900 for music, it dies too quickly. In fact, u can't use it much for almost everything. It's a powerful phone, but the battery life seriously dies too fukn quickly. I don't use it for anything other than txting. Otherwise it drains battery too quickly and i have to charge it often. That's y i use my iPod Touch as well, i listen to music for the whole day and never turned it off during the night, and continue the same thing the next day and charge it finally at night, so i can use it for a long time at least. Gaming on iPod Touch is decent as well, doesn't drain battery that fast and i can play 4 hrs straight on games such as Chaos Rings, which is quite intensive usage with great graphics.

Gaming on the other hand for N900, there aren't many good ones. I still think iPhone is more suitable for you based on your requirements.

4 apps should run fine in multi-tasking on iPhone 4 if u jailbreak it, and jailbreaking is legal now anyway so why not?? The only good ever comes out from the iPhone is by jailbreaking anyway so there's a 100% chance and perfect good reason y u should, no point not to do it so u'd definitely end up doing it anyway.

I get ur point of view, but at least his post isn't as useless as 99% of the other ones where they literally didn't do any research before posting a question. If u dun wanna help, that's fine, but ur contributing unnecessary comments that just mark as spam.




Ya, one other thing i forgot to mention, this community usually consists of people that are pretty sarcastic and aggressive or just unhelpful. Not targeting at anyone in general as i myself sometimes do that, but not to the extent that some others go for. When i first joined, i received tons of crappy help and useless comments, even though my question was a legit one asking for help on my bricked N900 (and i did do my research).


To be honest, getting good help on this community is quite hard, at least for me anyway. There're tons of documentations and wiki to read so that's good, but really, those are a pain in the ***. I consider myself a heavy power user, i do tons of forum searching and Google searching and it's really painful, tiring and annoying to read documents and piles of paragraphs of text just to find a few answers here and there........unlike getting help at other communities like XDA Developer (for Windows Mobile or Google Android) or any of the warez forums for Iphone.

I own both the N900 and the Desire, while my missus has an iPhone 3GS (not quite an iPhone 4, but useful for comparison). If I had to choose between the three I would choose the N900. I'm not a gek to the extent that I'm a programmer or anything, but I'm a big retro gamer and nothing has ever satisfied me for retro gaming the way the N900 does. The cmera is not that bad, however I must admit I found the camera in the N95 8GB to be better, but it's not as awful as the Desire's camera. The sound in the Desire is also absolutely awful. HTC Sense is fantastic though and the screen is brighter than the N900, however if you look closely enough you can see how pixellated it is. The iPhone is easy to use and has great sound qualities and thats about it. Browsing can be annoying on it tooThere is a huge number of apps but most are pretty useless.

I have both HTC Desire and N900.
The desire is my everyday "phone" and the N900 is basically used for web browsing and emails when I'm front of the TV at night and couldn't be arsed getting off the couch and walking onto the study.

I used the N900 as my primary device for @ 2-3 months before getting fed up with the blank screen/fail to unlock/fail to answer incoming calls bug and switching to the Desire.

The h/w keyboard on the N900 rocks and bar a few dodgy ones, most of the apps in the repos (even devel and testing) are quite stable. In my opinion the battery is fine for general use, including music, web surfing and watching vids. I'd suggest that many who complain about the battery life, have a ton of not so good apps sucking the life out of it!

If your one of the many r-tards that get on this forum and piss and cry about not having 50 gazillion apps like the I-moan, then the N900 is not for you. As a converged device it's fine, just remember, even Nokia said, it's a MID with a phone, not a smart phone..... big difference.

The Desire is stable, easy to use and offers a good smart phone alternative. I wouldn't suggest the I-victim (3 or 4) just because it's a VERY AVERAGE device which has been subjected to some VERY AWESOME marketing. nuff said
