On the other hand, this IS doable, and if done, it would be far easier on the non-tech-savvy end user. If I knew how to code in C/C++, I would contribute, but that's outside of my abilities for now.

I strongly disagree about being more handy on the device. Combining images from another theme to another would require ability to edit images (paint and cut images etc) in order to make them fully fit into new theme.
