Apparently it's common in some parts of the world to yank the battery instead of rejecting calls. The back cover sensor gives advance notice, so that N900 can do emergency shutdown of microsd. If battery is yanked while microsd is accessed, many brands of microsd will just die.

I threw my phone (E65) once, but never yanked the battery instead of rejecting calls :rolleyes:

Why don't you buy the Nokia original back cover instead?

No you just need to put a small magnet here.

Still, need to be careful about adding magnets on the phone. I think these kind of things could interfere with the phone or memory. I still strongly suggest getting the Nokia original back cover.
