offtopic but in finland unlimited dataplan with maximum speed = 15 mbps = 13,90€ / month :P cheap it is.

I have no immediate plans on moving to Finland ... so I really hope we can get the 3G video call app on the N900 sooner, rather than later.

you just call any mobile phone number and choose "video call" instead of "voice call" - the person you call needn't be on any internet chat service like skype or thelike, let alone be on the same network you're on or be online.

as long as they have their phone switched on and are on a 3G network (which is true for really anyone i know), it "just works". like phone calls "just work" while a skype voice call might not. (at least you'll never reach me on skype.)

For me it never "just worked", I indeed have never seen a 3G video call happening. I tried with all kinds of devices, it just never worked. Maybe my sim is old, but I tried with other sims of friends relatives etc. Maybe they were old too. But here nobody seems interested in videocalls, nobody has taken the pain (and cost) of changing the sim with a new one, I think.

Skype on the other hand "just works", and now everybody's got skype, and finally android got videocalls too.

Yes, you have to change your sim card. The 2G migration to 3G required a certain 'bit' sim cards. I've seen it work. It's exactly the same as Skype - you just choose the option for 'video' call. The only difference iswhat you get on your mobilephone bill at the end of the month. Regular 3G phone call or data charge.

Here in India 3G is new.Everybody is very enthusiastic to make a video call.Almost all N series phones have 3G video calling feature.I used N70,N96 and both have that.But there was no 3G then.Now i dont have them with me lol.It seems many threads are there requesting this feature.I too am ready to pay once the feature is enabled but somebody told me in these threads that the feature is closed source and no dev can do that unless Nokia release the code which is almost impossible.In India voice calling and video calling rates are one and the same,at least as a 3G promo offer.

3G was introduced here in 2003 - I rule out the possibility that anyone still uses a pre-2003 SIM card in 2011 :)

Re: Still no 3G Video Call

I guess it's a pretty much standard answer since the maemo isn't such a big platform.
Skype works fine for me.

I also noticed that skype runs better then G.Talk, so how much better is the 3G then skype?

I for one would have great use of the 3G calling because I have a brother who is deaf and we communicate in sign language, thus 3G would be a wonderful thing to have for me personally. I would love to see some 3G calling program.

@qwazix
Before my N900 I had Nokia 6680 (I lived in Sweden at the time and 3G was free in my plan so I used it all the time with my brother, and it worked perfectly) and then I had Sony Ericsson K800i which also had 3G and I could use the front facing camera for video calls, so it does work, if only someone could/would make it happen for N900?

Csaba

Thats too optimistic. I got my new sim for a new contract, contract inluding a 500MB dataplan,on january 2010 and after 1 week of never getting a 3G connection, I called the support and they said "Oh, maybe you have received a non-3G sim. We will ship you a new one"
Ok, bad carrier, but as you can see there are still non-3G sims, even on new contracts.
