check one thing that i noticed when i was in search for a 2nd hand N900. insert your sim card and see whether it starts with it or without it and restart it 2 or 3 times to check this as the device which i came across was having the same issue. it picked my sim 1st time but when i restarted it, it didn't started with my sim card.

sorry, I didn't mean to sound ugly, I was just in a hurry and typing on the phone so didn't have enough time to search for it, I just thought it would be useful to give the info that I remembered a similar thread. Anyway, glad you found it.

Yay! That was my thousandth post :)

kohrime: Also you may want to consider reading this in a bid to prevent getting a fake N900.

I would also check underneath the battery cover to see if there are screws missing and/or they have silver colouring in them as those indicate that the device has been opened before.

If you have time to test it at the shop, just go through
Code:

dmesg
and see if there's anything that you think might be an issue. Also
Code:

cat /proc/mtd{1,2,3}| strings| more
may have some useful information in terms of device's history.

Things off the top of my head: -
1. It isn't locked with an unknown lock code
2. It isn't SIM locked to any network - try your SIM in it
3. It charges when you plug in the USB charger
4. Switch it fully off and see if you can switch it on again (check for boot bugs)
5. Check screen calibration and vibration
6. Check to ensure you can switch on bluetooth and the FM radio
7. Play some music and see if the volume keys work
8. Check if the headphone socket works.
9. Use the camera to take a picture, ensure you can view it afterwards
10. repeat above for video
11. Switch the GPS on and see if you can get a lock
12. Open a command shell or text editor and see if all the keys work
13. Make a call to see if the phone works, and that the other person can hear you!
14. Check the WiFi works.
15. See if the screen auto-dims when you cover the sensor
16. If possible, check the notification light works for received call/text

I think that's most of the hardware checked out... any software issues should be solvable with a full reflash....
