Did you try flashing both firmware & emmc files? My n9 also came with PR 299 by default but I'd changed it to 001 variant during PR 1.1. I'd no issues with PR 1.2 OTA update.

Got my update 15 minutes ago. Australia, 16gb unlocked.

My Malaysia 16GB cyan N9 just got the update available in Applications

Gritting my teeth and shaking my fists...have...to....go....to...worrrrkkk!!!

At least this gives me something to look forward to when I get home!

Now I'm going to spend the whole day wondering if I should just try to update without any kind of reset, or if I should hard reset first and start from fresh. Does it make any difference? Has anyone got a view on this kind of thing?

Same here! Creating a backup and installing PR1.2 OTA on 16GB Australia version :D
