No matter what I try I can't seem to figure out how to install this...

Code:

apt-get install tor

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree

Reading state information... Done

tor is already the newest version.

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.

1 not fully installed or removed.

After this operation, 0B of additional disk space will be used.

Setting up tor (0.2.3.10-alpha-1) ...

chown: /var/lib/tor: Operation not permitted

dpkg: error processing tor (--configure):

 subprocess installed post-installation script return

Errors were encountered while processing:

 tor

Updating desktop entries... Done

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code

The following gives no error message but changes nothing (i e if followed by a new apt-get install tor or apt-get -f install I will still get the above output)

Code:

chown debian-tor:debian-tor /var/lib/tor

A little help would be greatly appreciated...

Seens like you need root (devel-su)
If you already are. Try to further escalate priviledges with develsh.
Then, install package
