You're right, there is logically "no reason" that it wouldn't work. In fact, I use iChat on my Mac to video chat with my wife on her Mac and a buddy on his Mac, all over a Google Talk account. Google's infrastructure and protocols in use certainly support it. iChat just sees it as a Jabber server and is happy to pass video over XMPP. If the Nokia video chat client was truly standard...I have to think I could VTC from my N800 to my Mac....but I can't.

Thoughts?

Indeed. I'm in the process now of installing an XMPP Jabber server on my Sun 2100 running CentOS 5.0. I'm hoping to pick apart the CODECs et al in use and I'll report my findings, successes and or failures back here. If anyone has any input, I'd love to hear it!

The good news is that this feature is supposed to be making a comeback in RTCOMM. When? No idea, just the same Nokia "soon".

I don't know one can make an argument for or against the "video chat option" having a bearing on the decision to buy a N800 unless that person has the sales figures break down, do you? What I can say is I also was heavily persuaded by the fact that Nokia had a beta program (which implies they would follow with a program or at least an on going beta program) when I dropped my $400.00 down for one.
