Really? Here in the UK you can get a prepaid SIM card in any supermarket. Either with some credit included, for the price of that credit, or without credit for £1 or below. £1 does not seem too much for a quick test.

I'm remembering how my N900 started to break €10 SIM cards one after another, because of a irreparable bad contact (that was the main reason I bought my first Jolla, by the way).
I have never ever heard of a phone breaking a SIM card. I had one SIM card for 16 years, moved from one phone to another 8 times, and it is still going strong. My pet peeve is that damn Jolla decided to change the format "just because", making my SIM card incompatible.

Anyway, your case sounds like the problem is with your phone, not your SIM card. If it were mine, I would open it and try to fix it myself (it is most likely just a contact problem after all) but if you are not comfortable with that, send it to Jolla Care or take it to any random phone repair kiosk down the road.

Oh, and...

Same issue here, what's exactly a "power-cycle"?

Turn off and on.

It is more than just a software reboot since it may involve different initialization for the hardware components.

Power cycle:

I prefer to use that word for
power off
remove battery
wait 30 secomds / push power button for 3 seconds
power on

@Peterleinchen: Thanks, no luck.

It's hard for me because when supermarkets are open, I'm at work. And when I'm done, supermarkets are closed.

Not your average phones. But this second hand N900 lacked one of these little screws, so one internal component was not firmly placed. And this component seemed to hold the SIM card. Worked fine for one or two years, but some day it started to "dance". The result was about ten connections/disconnections per minute when I was handling the phone, even more while walking. That killed all those SIMs.

Phone SIM contacts seem to be OK. Let's bet (and pray) on the card. I'm gonna get the answer next Saturday.

I just used a SIM cutter on my SIM. Worked fine.

(although I may need to get a new SIM soon, since mine is too old to support 4G)

Sounds like what was happening to me, even if the cause might have been a software bug (in ofono) rather than hardware.

I guess there's some flash memory on the card and too many reads/writes can kill it.

well. Yes. A SIM have memory.
for contacts
for SIM apps (banking fx)
for carrier apps

basically the apps are tiny java code, stored on card.
the cards can more than just provide you with a number ;)
its even exploitable.

I used simple scissors and a diagram. And I managed to get a "cut-out" mini-SIM remainder from a telephone shop, for free: they throw out a lot every day.

That way, I can use my previously micro-sized SIM (Jolla) on my ZTE (mini SIM slot).

Well that's mildly terrifying. I knew you could store contacts / text messages etc. on there but I had no idea there were actual programs on there too, I assumed all that was handled by the OS.

Java, of all things...

Tried today another SIM card and no luck. Time to write an E-mail to Finland.

Wonder if a factory reset (another one) could do something useful.

I still suspect a hardware fault. Most likely something simple like a bent contact. But if you send it off to Jolla, they will reflash it for you anyway.

I cut mine with scissors. It works fine. The issue is backwards compatibility with more sensible phones that use a normal SIM size.
