Well this, nor window maker, openbox, or kde, was meant to replace hildon, the intent is to show that these are viable alternatives to the matchbox prison. My hope was always to spark interest in the community and nokia. Are any of my ports commercial grade, tested by lots of people, nope! I test and pass along, i miss things, idont know how to fix everything. But, look what a hack can do, part time, in two weeks, What could Nokia do with some real direction.

Re: XFCE Available

Is threre a good way to exit the XFCE to Hildon? Every time I log out from XFCE, the screen keeps showing the XFCE background image. No hildon menus are shown. The only way seem to be to press the power button and then the power button menu pops up to top left corner. Not whole menu can be seen but enough to select the Turn Off mode. After the restart normal Hildon desktop is restored.

Also, I noticed that my battery was drained overnight... Does XFCE leave something running so that the N800 can not enter into sleep mode?

in the control panel menus, select "Switch to Hildon"

Now... I have some serious problem. I tried to load XFCE this morning and all it show was just white screen. I restarted and tried next time XFCE@BOOT, and now my N800 is in constant reboot loop. (After original OS loads the blue bar stops at full, waits about a minute and then restarts.) How can I solve this without reflashing my OS?

Well, do you have ssh, if so, you have about 10 seconds to fix this.

NOTE NOTE NOTE, if it does not work when switching via menu, dont try to boot from it????

If you have ssh installed, you will need to ssh in when its booting, you only have about 10 seconds

as soon as you log in, run

su - user
nwm.sh

Sometimes this takes me 5-10 trys but I can always get in if ssh is installed. If you do not have ssh installed, I think its a reflash. Also setting the no-lifegaurdreset, may give you a some extra time to get in,but with no ssh, your hosed.

nwm.sh
This will remove the XFCE boot scripts, and return to hildon

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My first question? Did you install to MMC1 prior to my fix? If so, Have you updated your mount1.sh. Once you get booted back up, as user run mount1.sh, does it mount user local? Also make sure you updated the mount1.sh script before running it. If the mount is good, run ldconfig, and it should be fixed. you should be able to start it and stop it without issues.
If mmc1 is not the issue, please let me know...
NOTE this happened to me, thats how I found the script problem with mmc1 and the mount script. Luckily I was not bootinf from it, but I have been there before.
Nope... do not have SSH in it. So I guess it is time to reflash?
I tried to remove the memory card and boot to see if it would boot to Hildon, but no. (Assumption was that if it can not mount the disk image... it would not try to boot XFCE...) Maybe that is one future improvement idea to put a script to check if the image is available. If it isn't, the normal Hildon boot would be executed? Is that possible?
I installed the XFCE to MMC2 (internal card).
Re: XFCE Available
A replacement it certainly isn't. However, I've found that it is excellent for X11 forwarding! I get full Firefox, Evolution, even OpenOffice on my n800 while sitting in the living room at the speed of my desktop.
Hildon would handle the X11 fowarding, but very poorly. XFCE (Openbox and even KDE, for that matter) handles it smoothly. Highly recommended for those of you with Linux desktops.
Can't thank you enough PB!
Re: XFCE Available
Anyone using XFCE and wanting to print pdf files
http://penguinbait.com/epdfview.gz
this is a single executable to replace the file in /usr/local/bin
this will add the printing option in epdfview
gunzip epdfview.gz
rm /usr/local/bin/epdfview
mv epdfview /usr/local/bin
Sorry if this seems like spamming, just want to make sure all relevant threads get updated with the info...
