I disagree with this one, otherwice the plan is good.
I have this 50-year-old machine that I'm running and I'd say the 10km sprints are needed to keep it running smoothly!

Re: To amuse the community

Got a 51 year old machine here...
Still runs well...
feed it homemade cooking only..
make sure it gets plenty of sleep..
and quiet time outside in contemplation..

I never let it sprint though...nor jogging.
Running is one thing...when it is needed ...
Hiking with a backpack.. is better for the body..
That and proper gym at home...
but most important...
Chopping and hauling and stacking firewood...
THAT keeps a soul very fit.

DO NOT TRY ANYTHING SAID IN THIS POST!!!
EVERYTHING IS STILL UNTESTED!!!

Just fired up my N810 which I purchased about a year ago but haven't been using at all. Now followed endsormeans idiot proof instructions of how to set it up, update and get repos from Gronmeyer. Well they were not idiot proof! This idiot needed more instructions - which were nicely spread around the forum when I always managed to ask questions under wrong threads. The most stupid once I pmd. Still some self esteem left to keep and protect. But at last got it up and running with asui, cssu and diablo turbo. And also squeeze running on ED!

But something is missing: netsurf 3.8. I like how ultimately fast it is on Jessie on N900. So why not install it on this device? First I just thought of trying to dpkg those packages to squeeze. Why not? They are packages, they are debian and they are used in ED environment. I think I asked about it from sulu and I think he mentioned that there is a slight difference with armel (N810) and armhf (N900). I don't understand the difference to be more than couple of letters in the end of an image name but at last accepted it.

Also it may affect that those packages are for Jessie (I think) and there is bigger difference with letters with jessie and squeeze than with armel and armhf (maybe not: there are too e letters on both and letter s. Should use aritmetic to be sure of the percentages). But it could help if I get Jessie on N810! Started to google debian jessie armel chroot image and how to build one. Found many new words, debootstrap and others, and read through many guides of how to make it happen, webos, kameleon, debos, multistrapping.

Almost thought of trying start from scratsh to build an armel jessie img but then found sulus instructions for jessie chroot on ed thread and gave up. So much to do and have to understand.

Also thought that what if I would just try to install jessie with usb and imginstaller cause I atleast know how to partition sdcard with geparted. Now I already have to choose where to boot so why not just make one partition, use imginstaller to install jessie on that and boot up from there. The imginstaller must be wiser than me and it always knows how to configure keyboard and screen and wifi and such. Haven't totally buried that idea.

But in the end it is probably easier just to download img from the net and try. Finally found one jessie armel chroot img from Samygo blog and downloaded it on my N810.

Started to hesitate though cause it is build for samsung tvs. Now I am not sure is it possible that there are too big differences in setup, thinking of screen and volume stuff which could do some damage to N810. Idea was that because it is a minimal build without desktop or gui I would just try to dpkg netsurf packages with it and hope some --fix-missing or aptitude -t would fill up what is missing and I could launch netsurf from chroot. Simple and easy!

Endsormeans gave me an advice (while answering my endless questions): read through the forums and do not hesitate. Hmm. I have the samygo samsungtv minimal jessie armel img already on my device and would just need to change in .chroot the name and try.

So hard to give up of a good idea. We'll see what I decide.

Yours,

Maemish

Like the disclaimer
hahaha...

and really Maemish...you are no idiot...
you just had a rough start to the process...
you were no idiot...
you were over thinking the process...in fact.
Using too much brain ...
when you should have been sitting with a bottle of half finished rum...unable to stand on your own without assistance ..and drooling profusely while repeatedly proclaiming loudly that there were pixies in your underwear molesting you...

THEN...attempting the walk through...

The walk through is the cobbled together best methods for the various disparate parts ...
for getting one's n8x0 to that penultimate state...explained In layman's terms so as to avoid confusion...

It is just that no one put it all together under a meta post (applicable context I believe) ...and explained it for someone who never heard of linux or maemo or the NIT line ....before. .

As far as how you have progressed since finally finishing the walk through ...
I am impressed.

In fact if you wish to work marvels and miracles on the n8x0...
then you are very much on the right path... I believe.

I just love the compatibility analysis; there's just 2 letter difference between almel and armhf, vs lots of letter differences between squeeze and jessie...

Yes sure that's valid measure of software compability, we count letters all da time to determine what we can install and where, right! :D

Re: To amuse the community

True dat. Making it easier to install netsurf. My mind has formed through my education and my daily work to analyze stuff, try to find possibilities and what goes together in my field of expertize and what not, and to find the fastest solution to overcome porblems so that people can work. With this mind and with the knowledge I have on linux systems this is what I end up with: mind grabs a hold of everything it has in memory and tries to make them fit together to overcome problems. I know these things wont wok yet they are real possibilities to me untill proved wrong, cause as part of my education and personal studies I have had to doubt everything and test before believing and accepting as truth anything. Thats why not understanding something is for me not a "no" but a "possibly" and if someone here just says he doubts that some idea wont work it is not yet a fact parameter to be taken under calculations and consideration. If something can't be done and is explained why I accept it, but mere doubts I am not able to live according cause it is in contradiction the moral and truth .config of my mind which goes above everything and for which I have strict firewall rules for it not to be compromized.

Re: To amuse the community

huh....
interesting...
My mind has formed through much much time taken in brain cell replication...
Which I then proceeded to try to destroy at an alarming rate...
And now am hanging onto the essentials for BMF (base motor functions....autonomous stuff...breathing..pumping blood...etc....)

And for god's sake stop doing that...
you'll get a crick in your neck...
from being bent over all day ...
marvelling at the wonder and majesty...
of your ethical and moral belly button...
:D

And you most certainly should get one thing clear.
Yes...if one tries there may always be a way to accomplish something.
But if one of the long standing NIT experts here say something is doubtful ...I would try listening to "the why" of said reasoning ...
rarely will you hear someone say "doubtful" concerning anything.
The only time you may hear the word "doubtful" ....is in relation to trying to achieve more than the specifications of the device or platform can actually manage.
You are more likely to hear "has been done", "could be done", "can't be done", "I or someone else already did it", "waste of time trying to do" ..
If you can conceive of an idea to implement...
and search the forum ...
My money says you will find at least one thread devoted to the idea you "just came up with" and it has been tackled in a dozen ways already....over the last ten years.....
Currently ....you and everyone else are riding the coat tails thus far of NIT giants long gone now who paved the way and accomplished most of what is enjoyed now....
You have a very long way to go before you can fill their booties.
So save the autobiographical on your motivations for when your feet can fit those booties.

Re: To amuse the community

My feet are size 45 so they fill most commonly in use boots. Never have thought of trying to prove to be something (not anymore and never here). I just share what I do and not thinking to be more that I am - same time being ok with what I am. The thread should actually be "To amuse myself" cause I laugh a lot to myself while trying to learn to be a linux hacker (which I honour so much) and same time being well aware that I'm not gonna be one cause I like too much of being everything and doing everything.

I've tried boots couple of times but they felt uncomfortable. My two pair of shoes I wear are safety boots and running shoes. In the 90's I wore indian moccasines through the whole year in finland. Now I'm more dull.

Please delete this thread. Not fitting to the forum and more social media type one man show facebook wall. Not wanting forum to change that way. Sorry. Left from facebook a while ago but facebook didn't leave me it seems.

I wouldn't say it doesn't fit the forum. I for one enjoyed following it and found it both entertaining and educational.

Having said that, you have the power to delete it yourself . Simply delete the first post.

Maemish 2019-03-16 09:57

Re: Please delete this thread

Can't find a way to delete the first one. All the next ones no problem and they show "Delete this post" option. I bumped to one old thread with a comment form one guy not wanting this place to become just another social garbage place but to stick on subject. I thought about it and yes, if I come to this forum I would not want to find myself in the middle of many threads just being social media type threads. I got this idea of to have one thread where people could post stuff like this but better not. It will be me posting and using this place as a facebook replacement.

endsormeans 2019-03-16 10:30

Re: Please delete this thread

I am with pichlo on this
I don't suggest you delete your posts.
They are informative ...and written casually which makes for good reading.
Yes ..this place isn't conducive to a facebook floor plan....not really built that way...
Even off topic is sporadic in how topics come and go..
talking of the most recent oddities in our lives...or something we found interesting or funny..or sad...commiserate .....and we chat concerning all of it and how it impacts our lives.....
Even the "look what i drew" thread ...or the camera pic thread ...
are brief vignettes on our lives ...sharing with others...
I think it is more personal here than social media...
and there is no impetus here to post regularly like social media ...
also there is no "gain" in the same context as social media here...
I wouldn't worry about you thinking your thread will change this place...into a some kind of facebook.,.
It won't Maemish...
I don't think an army could.
you may wish to diversify though...from ...as you say...your facebook format that you are familiar with...
you may find that that format feels limiting here...

The largest drawback of facebook and its ilk...
is that to be heard and seen...one must shout about oneself...
One must do or say or write something that tops the last thing written ...to keep the captive audience..
Here you don't need to do that ..
If you write...we will listen...and answer..
we may or may not agree with you ...
We may laugh with you or at you..
We may call what you say insightful, illuminating, educating, pompous, foolish, funny, or downright rutabaga - dumb....
in any given conversation.
We are all equal opportunity hecklers and praise - makers here.
and we do have care and concern for our own...
regardless.
So ...don't go deleting anything just yet...

Ok. Changed the title back. Just have to do a lot of work with myself not go to the old me. Used to post 10 own posts and have maybe 50-100 posts in conversation per day on facebook. I always delete the account, am away for 6 monts and go back for 1-2 months and then have to delete again. Compulsively social.

Re: To amuse the community

Best suggestion is...
Don't go back to social media....
It is well documented that such interactions that one would think would make one feel "part of a community" ....actually do the reverse...and make folks feel more isolated and alone than ever before...
and hence create a need to stay...or go back to it .
it is an unhealthy thing for our species ...social media......
"Black Mirror" did a great social media episode ...that clinches it.

Stick to TMO ...
Have some real conversations...here and in the actual world with others...
It is far more fulfilling.

Hell
Poke your head in "The Final Countdown" and say "yoo-hoo!"
at any hour ...and someone will show and chat ..about everything from cat milk to artificial intelligence..
Me...
I am done now though...
it is 4 am ....
Time for me to hit the snort fort and catch some zeds ...

Today I tried to watch the latest maemo leste video. Downloaded it but it didn't work with N900. I was glad I was offered to download it in different form. I did but it didn't work either.

Next thing I notice is that each time when I'm about to close Opera it says there is incomplete download going on. What??? I'm not downloading anything anymore!!!! I close the Opera and open again and it says the same!!! What is downloading to my hacker device?!? Was it a corrupted video package, disguised as mp4 or something phishy embedded to the video? And I was so stupid to just download "something"!!!

Ok, I will empty the history and memory and everything from Opera. Same goes on! I use the cleaning app and autoclean and remove and purge everything which I don't understand what they do but I hope the best. Still saying something is downloadin!!!

Hah, I close the device and open it again!!! That should do it. Still doing it!!! But wait - maybe something is downloading to videos still. I go and check videoplayer and I see incomplete video there. I delete it and Open Opera. It just doesn't go away!!!

So I remove the Opera, use the cleaning app again, install Opera again - but as soon as I open Opera and notice it opens the recent pages (!!!) even though I had uninstalled it and cleaned and everything!!! I'm now sure there is some tunneling stuff going on on back and I don't know what to do.

At last I click the top bar on Opera. Downloads. Hmm. What's this? I cancel the incomplete download and - amazingly Opera doesn't anymore say "download incomplete"!!! Me and my hacker device, which I know how to use to surf web, take pictures, send both (!) sms and fmms and make phonecalls, are safe!!!!!!!

Phiuuu. That was a close one. But I mastered it!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a real hacker!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taken from the google cache before it vanishes there too.

Re: To amuse the community

So here we go again with a Petshnop Boys tune (was it their song?). After I ran 15-20km in hard rain trusting that Nokia always handles being soked in water I lost my camera on N900. Because I wanted to shoot and share during the summer and have a navigation (have not yet learned to get a navigation on N900) I changed to my old iPhone 4/4s 16gb and used that. And was so thired of working with my VW Beetle project I didn't use my linux computers for three months but just watched some series with windows machine. The result: I have forgot passwords to 4 my computers and when I started now using N900 I noticed how stupid I have become with iPhone with no need to use my brains. So started again my learning curve and it seems from the start again. I managed to install jessie on ED and Netsurf 3.8 again but then got this good idea (again) which last time s****d my jessie and made an upgrade and tried installing synaptic and some other stuff. The result: jessie screwed and had to format the sdcard but now my linux machine does not anymore recognize the format of it. After messing with that I changed to mess with the fremantle side and made there an upgrade with the devel/-il. The result: Soma radio crashes, cssu appdownloader crashes and battery loader not working anymore. Just have to say that I accuse Microsoft and Apple for all of this. Should have stayed and used linux all the time. Hope I'll recover soon from the brain corruption.

How many kernels you can have at the same time? Can this cause problems? If not, I would like to start collecting them. Appdownloader still crashes. For a while I did not have 3G internet access but I managed to do through wifi apt-get -f install and now I have again working connections. Again installed ED and netsurf. Took a while to get that sdcard recognized but gave all priviledges to all and N900 found it. Gonna probably try again install Chromium 57 from odroid forum cause just want to have whatsapp and instagram on this phone. Probably I will do something wrong again and have to reflash. But now battery works again after got it calibrated!

Maemish 2019-08-15 06:43

Re: To amuse the community

Upgrade with devel really break the battery status but installing libbmeipc0=0.8.55+0m5 and shutting down and rebooting fixes it. But so I have now both cssu and kernel power installed. Is it normal and/or is there any problems to occur? If I have two kernels isn't it the same as having two cores? I have a two core processor.

I really don't think it is possible to run 2 kernels simultaneously unless you are running them in separate VM's :D

As the picture shows they are there. And when I did apt-get -f install it fixed the both of missing parts So here I ajm even I didin't intend to.

Re: To amuse the community

cssu and kernel are 1 and the same...not 2 separate kernels...
you are just choosing which of the cssu kernels to run..that is all...
Can't run 2 kernels simul.
unless as juice said...one in vm..
and vm can be hard on a system. as is...
let alone attepmting to run 2 kernels directly on system...

last thing we need are schizophrenic devices..anyway.

having a 2 core or 4 or 8 core does not mean one can run multiple kernels simul.
It is just increased processing speed and power is all.

Haven't seen you for a while Maemish...
lately seen more of you at talk...
Glad at that.

Re: To amuse the community

So now I checked and both have been installed but uname -srm gives power53 as the kernel. Do I then need to uninstall the cssu kernel? Does it matter it is installed if it is not in use? Install meaning it is shown in my installed programs catalog.

You can well have it "installed" which means it just sits there on the corner of your flash taking up some space... but there's nothing harmful in having it there.

Maemish 2019-08-16 08:20

Re: To amuse the community

The two core stuff was ment not to be taken seriously. But worry of two kernels was. And reason why I have been away was that I was not using N900 because the camera was broken and if I don't use N900 I don't want to hang around here - with outdated iPhone. And the site has banned my home network/router/pc whatever. No help if I use VPN or not. Access denied. It started when there were those thousands of visitors on this site.

endsormeans 2019-08-16 13:13

Re: To amuse the community

ah...yes that mass "visitor" issue didn't help eh?
there must be someone in the "Mod Squad" or higher up the food chain or an ip -phreak around here who can help you out. I bet it is seeing your ip address as part of a block that has been banned (due to the "visitors)

hm...

In fact...that will be 99% most likely what has happened .

Which in turn may have possibly some effect on your n900 from that other thread ..it isn't a certainty ...but the possibility of side effects from a restricted and altered ip access may indeed have repercussions ...
(though slim and remote a possibility it is)

Also ...
You have an n8x0 don't you?
If memory serves...
So it isn't like you are totally out of the maemo scene due to having no device.
the n8x0s more fun to play with anyway...
:D

I didn't really get into the N810 cause I could not see benefits over N900 with specs and capabilities (no 3G).

Re: To amuse the community

it is an internet tablet ....so yeah... it doesn't have 3g.
But considering you like to experiment ...
I can think of no better device than the n800 or n810 to do it with...

"specs and capabilities" ?
Sure the n8x0s don't have the specs comparable to the n900..
But capabilities?
I hate to tell you man...
But an n8x0 can do a lot more than the n900....in many ways...

I do suggest you take a glance at the alt os's and alt desktop managers for the n8x0 that can be utilized
I don't know of any handheld that can handle all that the n8x0 line can...

check my google drive link in pimp my n8x0 ...and see.

Re: To amuse the community

To give ease to the community I have now started to listen youtube instruction videos concerning linux basic commands. While going to work this morning I listened again and then this formed in my mind. Don't know how well it works. It first started as a song and the first two paragraphs were like a chorus but then it didn't continue as a song.

I like to
toor toor toor
myself apart
- with linux

Where less is more
than more
and where more or less
both are in core

In the start
I was slashed a lot
I was filled with
many dots

My selfimage
was in many cd's
I used cd
to search myself

Sometimes
I wanted to get rid off
bad habits
But I have -r problem
and could not

I could still
make something
of myself
- so I made a textfile

It said: "Hello world!"
and urged to read me.
Accidentally
I purged it.
Without -i.
Gladly I was still left.
Or at least I thought so.

I thought to
clean the leftovers
of this party.
I used auto for it.
I ran on to some obstacles.
But my auto removed them.

I called myself
but the echo was silent.
Didn't know anymore
what was lost and found.

Some are strugling in life
when they have CP.
I felt relieved to have one.

I thought I need to go to
search myself.
But could not find my boots.
So I called my cat
and it told me where they were.

But on my boots
all the strings were messed up.
I couldn't use them.

Without my boots
I felt naked.
So I flashed.
It made me feel whole again.

First...
There is no way I will hit the "thanks" button for your post ...
"thanking" you just doesn't seem proper.
Nor would poking (any kind of) fun at your situation be any more appropriate.

Personally I know less about the various (are there many media players for the n900 actually?) media players for the n900 ...compared to the n8x0s ...

Is it the stock media player you are using ...that went "teats up" on you?

(hm. actually ...you probably should start a thread in the n900 subforum under the title
"[name of] media player just stopped playing video. Help!"...
if you can't find a thread that discusses your situation, then start one, someone must have an idea what the issue is..and have dealt with it before...
can't hurt Maemish...
...someone must have gone through the same ...and can point you the right way...
and if anyone takes a poke at you...
ooooh!
I will give them such a pinch.
so cheer up:D)

Maemish 2019-09-22 06:41

Re: To amuse the community

Thanks. There are lots of threads about this problem. It has been an issue/bug before PR 1.2 so when you start to search you will find many threads with an answer "wait for PR 1.2". So far I have tried tracker-processes -r with and without reboot as well as install --re-install encoders or it was something like that with and without reboot. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling different players. This situation concerns all of them: Unable to play video. Video format not supported. And I have to be able to watch my linux terminal education videos as well as videos of the folk music accordion plays I need to practise. I just think reflashing is the easiest way. Maybe I start a thread and ask help before that.
