Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

For now I've switched to Lineage:

-> Browser is unusable
-> no Videochat with Riot possible (or no native Riot Client, or secure Jabber or Signal Client)
-> battery consumption (Xperia 10)

Still I'm missing the OS in general. Gestures are way nicer implemented than with Android. Card/Caldav OOTB is also a very fine thing.

Maybe sometime in the future again.

^ despite my critical stance, the browser isn't "unusable".
Battery life is very good on my Xperia XA2 (knock on wood that it stays that way for a while).

I guess you're right about the video chat though.

No need to hope for "maybe in the future" - SailfishOS will never be able to fully compete with Android (yes, LineageOS is Android, too) as a "use-your-phone-for-everything" OS. It will always require a conscious choice for a specific mindset (and agianst another).

I had trouble getting connectivity back after an upgrade of my XA2, but thanks to jolla.together succeeded without reflashing the system and the upgrade feels good, especially the net performance has improved, it was terribly slow before, here.

100%. People have developed dependence on ecosystems, and if they truly value their freedom and peace of mind, they'll adapt their usage to suit. For example, I abandoned all social media and gimmick apps. I bought Sailfish licenses for my X and XA2 Ultra, specifically so I could have Android support in the event there wasn't a native app for something I absolutely had to have. Is it perfect? No. Do I feel better now that Google et al aren't farming my data? Yes.

Remember, if it's free... you're the product.

I wouldn't say the browser is unusable. Moreover, why can't you install Firefox Focus via Android support? I did, and it works as well as it did on stock Android - both X and XA2 Ultra.

I can't speak to Riot clients, but there is an Android app. I've never used Jabber, so I don't know. aebruno's Whisperfish client still works, I registered my XA2 Ultra on it yesterday, so that's a native Signal client. The Android Signal app also works.

As far as battery consumption, both my X and XA2 show markedly better battery consumption over Android. I know the Xperia 10 has a smaller battery than what people are used to, so maybe that's a contributor.

The Android support is there specifically to address most of your concerns: a stopgap to provide apps where native solutions aren't available, to reach a wider audience.

Likewise. I tried a bunch of alternatives but found it pointless, since the stock Sailfish browser was perfectly fine and actually better than most others, especially in the UI design.

I wonder what people mean when they say that it is "unusable". Can anyone give an example?

I'd imagine they probably want to use it to interact with some very modern social media sites with tons of obscure javascript content.

I'd say not unusable for an occasional link, but for generic browsing sessions, I wouldn't use it because of the absence of adequate build-in privacy, like blocking third party cookies, but also the lack of add-on support. The current web is just too full of tracking dreck. On both desktop and mobile I use first party isolation, http smart referer header, uBlock origin in an aggressive mode, cookie autodelete and I don't care about cookies (because they are thrown away anyway). A pleasant side effect is that I rarely see ads, and when I do, they are harmless because of all other measurements - I might even click on them.

Yes, I'm aware of some hosts-based (ad) filtering options on SFOS, but that is just part of the story.

Me either, and if it turns out I do need it, I open Firefox Focus. Most of the time - at least for the content I want to look at (TMO, TJC, Hackaday, looking up Gentoo USE flags) it's fine. It's typically responsive, and the UI choices are smart. I don't like reliance on javascript (or frankly, any other arbitrarily linked remote content) to look at a website.

Yes, I know this is anecdotal, but it's fine.

Actually, no I was not aware of it. I avoid TJC like a plague. Too hostile - and that comes from a guy who frequently comments on YouTube.

I have looked through that list and like juiceme, I did not find anything I would use or need :p

I have one reservation, though. This comment: "videos do not play". That is patently not true. I spend countless hours a day watching and commenting on YouTube videos. My Jolla is (still) indisposed and waiting for a cold restart, but the stock Sailfish browser on my Xperia X is what I use almost exclusively. There are some odd problems with responding to other people's posts, but watching works perfectly fine.

There are websites where embedded videos don't work. For example, BBC. They look like they still use Flash so I am not surprised. Nor am I missing it.

But yes, I accept the answer, even though to me it is a case of Schroedinbug :D

Again, thanks for the answer but that's a lot of advanced features WAAAAAY beyond what I would even consider using, or even know they exist, let alone know how to use them. First party isolation? Smart referer header? uBlock origin? Aggressive mode? Are you speaking in Elfish? :D

I found out only recently that most familiar Firefox settings are accessible via about:config.
I already changed a few cookie-related.
Not as good as uMatrix etc. but it's a start.
Javascript still worries me though. On an outdated mozilla engine. It can be disabled completely, but if it can't be enabled easily that's not practical.

I will tackle hosts-based ad-blocking soon. I use system-wide domain blocking on all my computers and wouldn't want to miss it anymore.

There is one important site that does not work with Sailfish Browser: github.com . But I agree, SFOS Browser UI is very nice, so Angelfish does try to reproduce better elements from it as well.

i confess i haven't tested the native browser much in 3.2, having abandoned it as inadequate in 3.1 ( joined the party on 3.0 with an XA2 plus).

it was chronically slow to load tabs, frequently failed to render a tabs properly, and occasionally seemed to completely lock up if it had to manage more than half a dozen open tabs at once (on a 6gb phone!).

since that point i have used firefox - whilst continuing to grumble that jolla need to fix this situation given how central the broswer is to SFOS's integrated account management user experience.

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

One thing that I would love to see in the Sailfish browser is something I miss from desktop Firefox - multi-account containers (or even a simpler way to deal with multiple profiles). I was quite dismayed, therefore, when after finally installing mobile Firefox via Android support I discovered it doesn't support it either (apparently it's desktop-only? no idea why).

On the topic of websites that do not work in the SFOS browser, that includes pretty much all Google websites; most notably for me, Google Voice and Google Maps. (I know the response in this forum will be "stop using Google products then" but that does not address the issue of compatibility.)

Fellfrosch 2020-04-24 12:54

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

I have some minor problems since Rokua with switching from landscape to portrait modus (Proš) on the home screen.

Very often the tile are still in the same constellation, after rotating the device to portrait. So I can only see those which are on the left side the rest is hidden. Because they ar not rearranged. I have to do some action on the home screen and than they rearrange like they should. This happens not always but quite often.

I don't know if it has to do that I used the patch Force cover size before, which isn't working on Rokua anymore.

Anyone else recognized this behaviour?

mosen 2020-04-24 13:41

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

Can confirm! Tiles stay in previous orientation sometimes and overlap on the sides also for me.
Frequency is not more than once or twice a day for me tho.
I did not use any patch but the recommended sed command from wiki:
Code:

sed -e "s/return allowed/return Orientation.All/" -i  /usr/lib/qt5/qml/Sailfish/Silica/Page.qml
EDIT,
since this is the general Rokua thread i might add that Fellfrosch and me have this on Proš.
Or did you check on XA2 also?
Is this the same Pichlo reported before reflashing?

epninety 2020-04-24 16:37

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

I don't usually leave things open so I had not seen that problem before. So I just tried opening loads of things on the Pro1 and I couldn't get it to misbehave at all in a few minutes of testing. Up to 12 tiles they all rotate and reorganise when I rotate the phone. With 13 they don't fit on the screen anymore and I have to swipe to see them all, but they still rotate and reorganise as expected.

My rotation is locked to only portrait and landscape, not all four directions, I don't have any patches installed with patchmanager though.

I will leave a few things open and keep an eye on them :)

That could be related to the hwkbd orientation on Pro because I have not seen the issue on X.

Edit: I was thinking of icons, not tiles... On my device tiles never ever rotate.

mosen 2020-04-25 08:36

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

Yes, seem to be at least somehow related to homescreen landscape orientation or automatic switching to it.
On Proš it just might be frequently discovered since the device makes most sense to use in Landscape?

epninety 2020-04-25 09:06

Re: 3.3.0.x Rokua

I've only found one way to trigger the behaviour that Fellfrosch described - and that is to put the device to sleep in one orientation, then wake it in the other. Whatever process drives the rotation at wakeup doesn't trigger the tiles to reorganise themselves.

Is it just me or have other people also have problem receiving MMS?

It may be another Schroedinbug as I never used them before but my daughter recently started sending me a bunch of MMSes for some reason. One a few months ago arrived but the three she sent today did not. They all just hang in there like this:

I am using Sailfish 3.2.1.20 on Fxtec Pro. Is it possible to upgrade to a newer version ? Jolla Browser has got at some point a problem with file download - it does not show notifications anymore about 'go to Transfers and see progress'. And when I open web browser from command line, I can see warnings related to attemps to download files - resume downloads from old session? And most of the time, when I open web browser, it seemingly stops responding, with 'Please wait or Close' question appearing many times in a row. Once I get past that, browsing is mostly fine - except some websites are not. EBay pages do not open , redirection limit exceeded . Github doesn't allow to edit code. Gumtree doesn't work either.

Thank you . Best wishes.

I have the same problem receiving MMS (X and XA2) as shown on your screenshot when my mobile data is on and my WIFI is on. If I turn WIFI off the MMS downloads. I have manually set MMS settings to T-Mobile, as "Reset to default" doesn't work at all.

Did you have both mobile data and WIFI on when you experienced the problem? I just want to find a way to receive MMS when both are on. Not that its hard to turn WIFI off, but if its 10, 15 MMS in 1 min from 5 people I have to hit them all, in order to download...

Jolla has a file with mms apn configuration per operator. https://git.sailfishos.org/mer-core/...eproviders.xml

Older versions of SailfishOS have older version of this file. So when you did factory reset you got old mms apn configuration.
It doesn't matter that this configuration changed during next SailfishOS versions.
When you use "Reset do default" in newer version of SailfishOS it will get mms apn conf from the newer version of this file which is included in OS.

In SailfishOS you don't need to have wifi or mobile date on to send or receive MMSes. On Android you have to turn on wifi or mobile date but not in SailfishOS.

Me too.
File with configuration for all providers is updated.

From one side it should update your configuration during OS update if it's changed. But this file is updated manually on gitlab.

But it can be case like this:

Provider change configuration, no one change file on GitLab, you manually change apn configuration on your phone.
What OS should do during the next update?
Overwrite your configuration?

And you have to remember someone should update this file on gitlab and it's not happening very often.

Of course, we can make a thread about that on TJC and wait for Jolla reaction.

Yes, I think this is good idea.

Whenever user manually edited these configurations, the OS should leave it as is. Independently of OS version or any changes on whatever location.
But: when these configurations are in its default state, they should get updated with every OS upgrade as well.
Or?
(it should not be too hard to implement a timestamp and change check against the gitlab version on opening this menu?)

Thanks for the hint about 'Reset to default'. I never ever had seen this pulley before! :)

3.3.0.16 is out but i have not tried.

I just asked on Telegram group if anything is broken in dev repo currently just to be sure :D
So maybe wait until devs confirm all is clean in repos.

[EDIT] better wait! My request started a discussion on Telegram and it is suspected that camera problems have been introduced sometime last week alrready when updating to 3.3.014.

This is the Proš Telegram, FYI.
