Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Just wanted to say in my Quest to play oggs on the N800, I am giving Kagu a try. Very nice program!
I don't see a way to get to the preferences in the App. I did find preferences in ~/.kagu and changed the player to mplayer which allows me to play oggs from Kagu! Thank you! Am I missing something, or is vi the "standard" way to adjust prefs. TIA, Craig... |

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Kagu is awesome. Great work ! I discovered the "turn off screen" function has a flaw (which I imagine the developer is aware of). I assume one of the purposes for the turn off screen function is to immediately extinguish the backight to extend battery power while listening to music. However, after xxx seconds the screen re-activates, then blanks (to black) but the backlight stays lit. Where xxx is the number of seconds set in IT OS2007 to dim screen. I tried to put a ticket on Kagu's tracker (Trac) website but I was unable to. Great player. I hope the bluetooth audio can be made to work for mono headsets soon also. Regards M5

Now, I didn't realize that I could use mplayer as my default player. So, it seems that all my tooling around was for naught, if I could have used mplayer to play oggs anyway. Are there significant advantages to using osso over mplayer? I do notice that oggs play a little more smoothly using osso, but if I can just use mplayer as the default for that purpose, I am considering uninstalling mogg and reinstalling the other ogg package, just so I can have full ogg functionality on UKMP too. Or am I mistaken here on what I will be able to do? |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
@xxM5xx: This was originally intended to turn off the screen whilst driving or in very low light conditions just to avoid distractions. AFAIK we weren't aware of this, I opened a ticket for it. In the meantime you could use the "softpoweroff mode" in OS2007 to simulate that (well, not the same, keys/touchscreen will be locked also) effect. Needs some playing around with system files though.
@klinglerware: Yes, this should work. Don't forget to reboot between/after ogg/mogg (un|re)installations. I believe mplayer is just slower switching between songs. (UKMP doesn't work with mogg on the n800? that's weird) |

One other question, is there an option to display the artist picture instead of the album cover when a song is playing? |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
no, but good idea. i'll open a ticket.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
As an experiment (maybe I was bored), I loaded kagu onto my 770 also, and found that it downloaded different album art than the N800 did for the same albums! Does this make sense? Not a serious problem, though, and not worthy of concern.
|
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Stupid question, but if my music is all already tagged with album art, will this program be able to display that or will it download art anyway?
|
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
tagged album art is not supported yet.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
regarding the theme , will there ever be a way to just have some sort of plain background , without any logo on it , im totally anal about this sort of thing lol , hell i went so far as to take my face plate off , strip it down to bare metal and powdercoated it black. lol but i would love to have just a plain green , orange , etc. background

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Suggestion:
simple 'random' play modes tend to not work well in practice. (No offense to Kagu: it's the result of mathematically desirable random distributions.) Long story short: in any decently-sized playlist you'll almost certainly hear some songs several times before you hear every song at least once. (again, something you want from a RNG, just not something you want when listening to music ;)) The accepted workaround in other apps (e.g. Winamp) is that they randomize the playlist, ensuring a good scramble but without the undesirable parts. Since Kagu is still in the middle of adding advanced playlist support, had you considered a simple feature where Kagu creates a 'scrambled' play order in memory? E.g. I load Kagu, select All Songs, click the Add All button - it creates the familiar playlist of x-hundred songs, but also maintains an additional 'random play sequence' field for each track. Kagu populates this field by randomly choosing a play 'slot' from an array of as-yet-unassigned slots based on the total length of the playlist. Then, when I select 'random' as the play-order, it doesn't jump to the next song based on random movement through the playlist, it simply moves to the 'next' song according to this random play order field. Alternately: You could create a random play order list when Kagu opens, from some arbitrarily large 'list' (say, 5000 songs). And then when someone is in random mode, you choose the next song by referring to said pre-generated list. If their actual playlist is smaller than the arbitrarily large list, you simply 'wrap around'. E.g. if 523 comes up as 'next' in a list of 300, just play track 223. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
@munky261: you could edit /usr/lib/kagu/data/sprites.png for now.
@Roc Ingersol: we're adding a "toggle playlist shuffling" option that re-orders the playlist (a'la winamp) in the next release. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
diisq , how exacctly do i do that....to say jut make it a plain black background. what do i use to get to and edit the file??

I have a quirk where I simply hate touchscreen protectors. To me it is kind of like buying a nice lampshade, getting it home and putting it on your living room table lamp and leaving it wrapped in plastic forever, or having a new couch delivered and never removing the clear plastic bag it came in., or buying a brand new car and immediately buying seat covers "to protect the seats"? That is kinda reverse logic in my mind. Just my opinion. I "enjoy" the car seats until they become worn THEN I cover them if necessary, not before. Why would I save the seats for the next owner to enjoy. I want to be the one wearing them out. Regarding screen protectors, I have owned Pocket PCs and now this N800.....the last thing I want to look through when I am using it is a scratched up plastic sheet covering the beautiful LCD display. I know you and I are talking apples and oranges, but we are each quirky. In your defense, I did grind the manufacturers logo off a Sears battery charger once. The reason was I was very angry at Sears at the time. Removing company identification from products they produce isn't something most normal people do. My shrink has Skype. I think he might be able to help you. <joking> |

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem or not, but I quit Kagu this morning, but the music kept on playing. I believe this was the OSSO player. I rebooted my tablet. Now, it appears that Maemoscrobbler is stuck, for lack of a better word. Nothing is being submitted and the timer in the control panel for it is stuck at 17:32. Any ideas?
(Maemoscrobbler is the only reason I use Kagu... so... a bit more important to me than most, perhaps.) |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
ddid you try re scaning your sd cards that's what i did it only happen to me once now all
is running tip top |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Hmm.. after another reboot and crash of Kagu.. it just seems to work again. No idea what's going on.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
On another kagu playback issue, when I'm listening with my Bluetooth headphones, I'm not able to commence my listening at the very beginning of the first musical item in my play list -- the sound begins coming through the headphones only after several seconds have elapsed, and I haven't figured out a way to back up or begin again so I don't miss the opening bars. Is this a buffering problem?

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
My kagu seems to crash all the time i try to start it up then it goes to a black screen then trys to find the album cover and then it crashes.....Im using 2007OS HE with nokia 770

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
I have been using Kagu for a while and have continued to fill up my 8 gig sdhc card with music for it. However, recently, I have noticed that upon startup of the program, the music, for a lack of better description, skips. Once the program has been running for some time, the skips essentially go away (not entirely, like once every other song or so). No other applications are running and there is no internet connection (or even trying to connect...Im in the car). This happens really bad just after a scan, which I do frequently as new songs are added. This happens with either osso player or mplayer. Thoughts...maybe disk access as the card has only about a gig of space left.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
My experience is somewhat similar to nanocore's. Although my two 4-gb cards are nowhere near filled, I get skipping in the opening minute or so of every musical number I play, which ceases almost without exception afterwards for the rest of the musical number. (I use the term "musical number" as I'm principally playing individual movements to classical compositions.) Also, as I've earlier reported (and queried) in this thread, I can't seem to get to hear the opening bars of any musical number when initiating play using my Bluetooth headphones.
|
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
nanocore, ascherjim,
just to let you know that someone is reading this and trying to figure out what might be the cause. I myself use KAGU with a fully-packed 4GB SDHC card (external), and do not experience this (and I also listen to classical movements), although I do not use BT headphones (I am sure this creates another layer of complexity). Not being one of the core programmers I am not much of a help here, but judging from my technical background this sounds some kind of BUFFER problem to me, some streaming issue between KAGU and the underlying player. Sorry again for so many words without a real help, greetings, karl. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
I raised this as a ticket on the trac, but not sure if it went through or not, so:
I turned on the "1 hr sleep", left kagu playing and woke up to no sound, good so far. Exited kagu. Went back into kagu (to show it off) and the interface was unresponsive to taps either by stylus or finger (other apps on the machine running fine, tappable). Closed it again, rebooted the n800, restarted kagu. still unresponsive (showing 1hr sleep at the bottom). removed preferences file (thinking it had something to do with a fixed time to stop working in that) and kagu wouldn't even startup. Ran the scanner and restarted and everything was ok, with sleep set to off. I just want to thank you for all the work you've put in.. this is now a good music player, and is well on its way to being a good polished music player. Faye |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
@Nanocore: it's probably jffs2_gc_mtd4 (jffs2 is built-in memory's filesystem type and gc is probably garbage collection) compressing the filesystem. nothing to do with kagu, could you check how much space you have left on by running "df -h" in an xterm and looking for the "mounted on: /" line? do you have maemoscrobbler installed/enabled, maybe it's the db file getting too big? check how big it is by running "ls -lh /home/user/.maemoscrobbler.db" in xterm (if it's a few megs and you're running out of space, just do a "rm /home/user/.maemoscrobbler.db" to delete it, it will be recreated next time you play a song.
@faye: could you install mplayer if you haven't, and change the default player to mplayer in the main menu? (the option should be available once you install mplayer) i suspect it's a nokia bug, kagu code is pretty straightforward and organized, and your symptoms don't fit the code at all. |

Sometimes these tablets need to be rebooted too. They get into strange states sometimes. I don't *think* this has anything to do with Kagu. Probably a hardware/OS bug(s). In conclusion: if it's working now, don't sweat it. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Not only do I love Kagu (and consider myself wedded to it -- hopefully for life!), I think my recent experiences (and minor frustrations) make me think it's appropriate for me at this time to revisit an issue I raised in September in the Kagu 1.0.8 thread:
QUOTE :1. How do you build your playlist without having Kagu (seemingly) begin playing the instant the first item is entered? Is there a way to delay the starting of play until the full playlist is assembled? UNQUOTE Trevarthan's answer to this was, surprisingly from him, a bit fuzzy and unresponsive. Considering that currently with my use of my Bluetooth headphones I'm not able to hear the opening bars of any musical number when first initiating play, I believe it is even more important (to me, anyway) that a playlist being assembled does not start playing automatically the moment the first musical number is added to it. First, it becomes disconcerting (again, to me) to be starting to hear the music while I'm still concentrating on adding more items to the playlist. Also, I may wish to edit the playlist before I begin listening to it. There is no way I can figure out how to return to the start of a musical item once it's begun playing. Now, I recognize that there may well be Kagu users out there who are in such a hurry to have their music begin playing, even while they're still adding to their playlists, that they don't wish to delay their listening gratification the additional second of two it might take to hit the play button to commence their listening. And I suppose I have to reluctantly acknowledge (if not necessarily respect) this need and desire. But since my problems are currently compounded by a delay in receiving sound through my Bluetooth headphones (probably a buffer issue, as has already been suggested in this thread) my frustration is increased. My appreciation is deep for all those responsible for Kagu and the a2dp hack (you know who you are!) which has made Kagu, to my knowledge, the only application where I can use my Bluetooth headphones to listen to my music on my N800. But as further improvements are being considered, can we possibly rethink the usefulness (or necessity) for this automatic music start feature? Cannot an option be given to the user which way he or she wants it to be? And in conclusion(!), do we know whether the new 2008 operating system will permit utilization of Bluetooth stereo headphones without installing the a2dp hack? |

I think the reason why it hasn't been done yet is because there isn't a whole lot of interest in the functionality. Maybe someone will pick it up though. It should be really simple to implement now that we have a main menu. Quote:

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
First, I should say that I think Kagu is the nicest of the media players that I have tried so far; good work, guys!
I do have one issue that I haven't found an answer to on the web yet. I have a lot of J-pop in my collection; while Kagu displays the right number of characters, they are all 'empty boxes' (character not in the font). I do have CJK support installed, and can see e.g. Japanese web pages. Any thoughts? Thanks! --John N. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Also, everyone please note that our Official Kagu Wiki is now open to the general public for editing. So, if you want to help out with the documentation, make a correct, or anything else constructive, please feel free.
Tickets are still closed to the general public (editable only by developers), but I'm hoping to install a forum soon on the Kagu site and build the community in other ways. Hopefully Kagu will continue pleasing users well into the future. Thanks for the help and feedback so far everyone! You're great! |

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.9
Ok... I've been using Kagu for a while now... but I have one potentially stupid question. How do I just instantly play one track instead of building a playlist?
It has to be possible, but my searching is coming up zero. |
