Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
As a Linux user I think it's perfectly OK that this video converter application is Windows only. Well, it's probably also good to target OS X. As has been said by others already, on Linux we're well covered. We've got lots of ways to convert our videos. What this Nokia application is doing is easing the access to the Nokia tablets for Windows (and OS X, eventually) users. This can only be good for the Nokia Internet Tablet community because it can only increase the awareness of the product.

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
The Nokia converter does not accept MOV files from my digital camera. Is this because MOV files are played with QuickTime instead of Windows Media Player? I think this will leave many of your intended users scratching their head???
Media Converter and MediaCoder does convert MOV files to Xvid-MP4 that play on the default 770 video player. Ron G |

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
vbrilon,
You have no idea how much we appreciate developers stepping in to exchange a few words here. It really generates a lot of goodwill, and, unfortunately, doesn't happen often enough. I'm an OS X user, but I've recommended this application to a number of my Window's using NIT converts and its certainly saved me a lot of trouble trying to explain the finer points of video encoding to them. ;) Thanks for everything! |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
This thing is awesome. Is there a way to convert movies (Talladega Nights) in this player? Do I need to use another program to convert it to an MPG 1st and then convert it using the Tablet Video Converter?
|
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
I've just downloaded and tried this and want to say thanks to the Nokia team that put this together.
This is no knock on the developers who've offered earlier versions of the same, and yep, it's windoze only (so far). And, while I am sure that it won't wash the dishes my kitchen sink (or convert every type of video known to man), it is a fine development and I am grateful for it. Thanks. |

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Well, I booted XP and gave it a shot. The input file was a 720Mb DivX/Xvid copy of a Star Trek TOS episode. Very high quality.
It claimed 15 minutes to convert: It appeared to freeze at 99% but I let it sit. After about seven minutes at 99% it finished and offered to copy the file. The app produced a 270Mb MP4. Mplayer (PC) reports: Code:
Playing 28_city_on_the_edge_of_forever.mp4. Code:
Playing 28_city_on_the_edge_of_forever.mp4. I have to say congrats, Nokia team! The video output was truly excellent, much better than I've been able to produce with tablet-encode. I'm going to play with mencoder this weekend and see it I can replicate the quality, but for Windows users this will be a fine tool. BTW, the OS2008 media player still does not recognize standard H.264 video podcasts downloaded from NBC or CNN. |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Jeff, thanks for the feedback report. I am assuming that the final file played ok on your N810?

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
so no easy way to put movies that were ripped to the computer hd (that are in video/audio subfolders)? I love the program, but as of now I can only play videos that I've recorded from the pc tuner. I'd love to watch movies on my next flight.

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
but you can't drag/drop folders in. This is the format that my movies are in. There is an Audio and a Video folder. The video has .vob, .ifo, and .bup files in it.

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
After some fiddling around with mencoder I am finally producing video that's equivalent to the output of the Nokia VC.
for 4:3 Code:
mencoder -vf scale=320:240 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 inputfile -o output.avi Code:
mencoder -vf scale=400:240 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 inputfile -o output.avi |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Jeff,
What bitrate is the resulting file using for both video and audio? If it's distinctly better than what you've got with tablet-encode (even after you've fiddled with the presets), obviously I'd like to know! Could you compare it with the current svn version of tablet-encode which will become v2.01 at some point: https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scm...iautils&rev=47 Primarily the presets have been simplified and generally bumped up, with "best" now topping out at 800kbps/192kbps audio. There's also a slight sharpening filter applied to try and improve the appearance. Initial comments from testers have been positive, but I'd appreciate your feedback. |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
I'll start a new thread so this one won't be hijacked :)

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Hi,
Just a short update to let you know that the Maemo Bugzilla (http://bugs.maemo.org/) now has a section for the Internet Tablet Video Converter. Please file any bugs/enhancement requests there. If possible, include short relevant video clips as attachments to your bugs as that'll help us diagnose specific video/codec issues. |

However, I uninstalled/reinstalled Nokia Video Converter, and I'm still getting the same error message. I think that qualifies as reproducing the bug with a clean install, yes? I'll go ahead and manually install the .NET Framework, although I'm not sure which version I should use. My machine is running Windows XP SP2. I don't know what else is relevant. |

Would you mind filing a bug on this at http://bugs.maemo.org? Please mention in the bug report if you're using any firewall software that would prevent .NET from downloading and installing. It doesn't sound that way, but I'd like to make sure. I suspect what's happening is that the installer is mis-diagnosing that you don't have .NET installed for some reason. In the meantime you can download the .NET 2.0 framework from Microsoft directly and that should mitigate the problem. |

Hey all - new to tablets, linux, and the forum - I unfortunately can't compare it to the app you mention. I can give you a rundown of what i see in XP though. The Nokia ITVC app appears to have 4 settings for video/audio compression: Best: 860 kbps video - 400x240 - 30 fps 128k audio Better: 640 kbps video - 400x240 - 27 fps 96k audio (default) Good: 400 kbps video - 400x240 - 25 fps 80k audio Low: 200 kbps video - 400x240 - 24 fps 64k audio I've converted two files at the default setting, one a small .wmv clip and the other a large avi file (51 minutes @ 700 megs). They convert as MPEG-4 with AAC audio('Low' when using the better settings). The compression using 'better' shrunk the 700meg .avi file to ~266. I have an N800, running OS2008 v2.2007.50-2, playing from the external slot on a Kingston 2g SD card. MPlayer and Canola2 stutter horribly on video and audio (just with these two clips), while I get really smooth playback using the default Media Player. I've yet to try the best setting. Hope this helps some, or at least keeps your windows friends from bugging you. Chris |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
I had the same issues as well. Converted a whole bunch of BMW Films using NITVC and none of them would play properly ('choking' / 'chunking') on any media player on the iT.
In the end, I went back to using N800 Video Convert which accepts any video that I can play back on my PC (.mkv/.AVI/.mp4, etc - haven't tried .mov yet) and the output plays back fine on my NiT. I know, since I have random movies playing in the background while I work, and I have not experienced any playback problems. The downside, however, is that not all the clips can be played by Media Player. No idea why, but some of them require mPlayer. Needs to be investigated. |

Doing so may lead to bad video quality and loss of audio / video synchronization (aka lipsynch). If you really want to reduce the frame rate, use an integer factor (one frame out of 2 or 3), for example to convert 30 fps to 15 fps. Other value are usually a mess. |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
There's a new release of the Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter available: http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/videoconverter
The new version now provides support for Windows Vista as well as XP. In addition, we've made some serious upgrades to the codecs used so the video quality should be significantly enhanced. Many of the bugs reported have been fixed by this release, so please try it out and let us know your thoughts. Thanks |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Can I go back to the old interface?? I don't like the new interface as much as the old style. I just installed it on a new machine and saw this different interface.

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
So I installed the latest version of the Video Converter...my first video I converted...came out upside down. The source file is correct, but the output file was upside down. Anyone else get this?

Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
Well, I tried it with a different movie, and it came out upside down too. The source files that are coming out upside down come from a divx made with CloneDVD mobile. I tried with other files I got from the internet and they come out fine. Its really weird. I will post the bug when I can...I guess I could cut the clip down so I can upload part of it, but...not sure if thats helpful.
|
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
I am led to believe that CloneDVD is causing the upside down image and not the Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter.
Since the new version was released several days ago, I'm happy to say that it has worked fine for me, with output videos playing flawlessly on my N800. I just converted all 6 episodes of Star Wars overnight and am copying them over to my N800 now. Input files were 700MB, output files were 569MB if only I had somewhere to backup these converted videos....say, like an FTP server or something. |

During the install there's a pre-requisite install of MSFT C++ 2005 libraries - I've previously upgraded to the MSFT C++ 2008 libraries. I assume that I couldn't have both installed concurrently or should I just go ahead and accept the installer's recommended actions? Thanks for any forthcoming advice. |

Cross posted from another thread --
It's worth adding here, that in spite of the name, the "Nokia Converter" software does not come from Nokia, nor is endorsed by anyone from Nokia. I'd suspect the authors of that software may want to consider rethinking the name of it due to trademark issues. But I am not lawyer, so I don't know. What I do know is that Nokia has nothing to do with this software. |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
I downloaded the latest ( v0.32 ) and I keep getting the popup
"The mediahandler process could not start properly. Please check to make sure you have your firewall configured to allow it to connect. " I am running on an XP laptop that is sitting behind router and uses NAT. Where is the mediahandler.exe trying to connect ? Does it connect to a server out on the internet on port 1234 ? Or does it listen on the port 1234 ? Or is it trying to connect to port 1234 on the local box ? I have tried opening port 1234 on my router firewall for incoming connection, all outgoing ports are already open, and Windows firewall has exceptions listed for Mediahandler and Internet Tablet Video Converter . What more do I need to do ? |

a) delete the .exe b) run every virus scanner I can get my hands on. c) consider my wasted time as a lesson in running downloaded .exes.... I cannot think that there is any valid reason that a program such as this would need to connect to the internet.... (unless you explicitly were pointing it at something that you know lives on port 1234 ....) |
Re: The Nokia Internet Tablet Video Converter
It listens on port 1234 on the machine itself, so your router has nothing to do with it
