Guy posts, General comes on and say this thread already exists elsewhere, ITT forum noob tries to apologize/make amends/plead ignorance... this is like the 3rd or 4th time I have seen it... kind of annoying... I like the new version, video and youtube work much better, I LOVE Canola, and am glad to have all the apps I like back on there, camera, recorder, FM radio, Garnet VM, Pidgin... I do not seem to be having thumb board problems... Anyhow for me it is 2 thumbs, pointing to the stars |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I like the new OS, but it obviously needs polish. Well-written submissions to bugzilla and votes on existing bugs will help much in that regard.
As for the impatient replies by some senior members, surely the newcomers can understand if they look outside themselves at the bigger picture. Surely the shoe has been on the other foot for them, somewhere else, in some other context. Regardless, I think we can all play nice together if we want to. This forum is getting too big for anything less. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Jebus, and the war begins. Ever opinionated, here I go.
90% of the times The General (Sorry, I like that nickname) has said a thread is redundant, it has been. Every time someone buys a tablet, there's a new thread with their commentary, shattered expectations, rants about things being broken, and the same stock standard troubleshooting/replies. I hope the old crusty users here don't seem unfriendly, but guys... it's been over 2 yrs for some of us and you start feeling like free tech support. Everyone, The General included is more than willing to help out (in fact I've seen about a 10 to 1 post ratio over the past week of him helping someone no questions asked vs. identifying a redundant thread). If you want to get an idea of how some of the old timers feel, log in, and read every single new thread with the express purpose of trying to help someone with troubleshooting. We do. It grinds ya down sometimes. I promise I'll always be my sarcastic self though! Hugs & Kisses, Hedge |

The thing is- you can't complain about it when you have the responsibility to help others. Yes, it is the responsibility of the veteran Nokia users that post here. If you know the answer and you see the post, why not do your part to help out? Without the ongoing input from people like you or the General then others will never learn or find answers. You don't know how many times I have explained the choices available to Tacoma owners for lifting their truck, and how to go about the work. Or how many times I have explained how to build a simple relay driven circuit. Or how to use, cut, and paint acrylic parts for modding PCs. Blah, blah, blah. But I still help those people who ask. And I've even put together tutorials for the "canned answer" approach, to save time and have the users get a comprehensive document relating to their questions. Maybe it's because being a part of the Tacoma forums (TTORA-NE) we actually met in the flesh, worked together with blood sweat and tears, and broke our trucks on the trail and needed to fix them together that gives me a different more personal view of how to treat other members of a forum, veteran and newbie alike. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Now that the dust is settling, more apps (i.e. rdesktop, canola, maemo mapper) seem to be downloading, installing and running correctly for me. I think OS2008 on the N800 rocks..
|
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
As I noted in my "Merry Christmas" thread here, I managed to get 3 seemingly perfect OS2008 installs on tablets that had old versions of OS2008 on them... so obviously prior OS version is a critical factor... just as backup restore vs no backup restore may be another.
Anyway I second Hedgie's remarks. The 10% of the time that his tongue isn't stretching his cheek out, he makes some fairly reasonable points! and :p |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Thumbs way up.
BTW: I was in tech support for 8 years in one company, more in others. I heard a lot of repeat questions, and saw a lot of them on forums and in email as well. So it's not like the topic cops are experiencing something I can't comprehend. |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Sorry but I am also a newbie and it is not the easiest place to perform searches - using the inbuilt search it returns tons of links i.e. search for "770 compare n800" and you get lots of hits, most of them are not applicable to what you are looking for... Also there are times when you look for something which is like something someone asked before but not quite i.e. how is the performance comparison between devices... Maybe the thing to do create a new sticky for these sort of questions or create a new forum as the tablet comparison questions seem to keep on popping up!
Also while it sucks to be a newbie asking these sorts of questions it is nice when an experienced user group strives to be helpful and welcomes the new flock into the fold rather than giving them the cold shoulder and telling them to do a search instead... I also agree that it sucks to have to repeat yourself over and over again but building the user base rather than alienating them (especially people with little to no technical experience) would be the better approach... |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Both sides have valid points. It must be annoying to see the same questions pop up all the time, especially since the search engine (the google powered) really works. Yet on the other hand, some issues are important enough, e.g. like this one, to be discussed many times.
|
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Been on both ends of this discussion :-), but searches are often more frustrating than is worth it. If the search REALLY stinks, I assume they are using google which seems to become more useless by the day and often seems to be more of a sales catalog than an actual search for something useful to *me* and whatever problem I am trying to solve (starting on page 10 will often get you past the paid placements and into some useful information unless it is just all gobblygoop). After trying a half dozen to a dozen or so different search parameters and getting nothing useful, yes, sometimes I do get a bit frustrated and will pester the gods :-).
Yes, people should search before asking but I can certainly understand why that might not be the first choice. I do it but often come back to having to beg anyway :-). |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I don't know if its me or what, but the finger keyboard does not work ok. With or without backup it doesn't pop-up very often. And when it does, aplications like MicroB doesn't recognize what I type.
Incredible in a final release of an operative system. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
One thumb up and one down. Great promise. I like the snappier speed, larger more finger friendly interface, but it still feels a little beta-ish and I've gone back to 2007 until the next release and/or until more apps are available.

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I have had a host of problems since “upgrading” my N800 to OS2008 about a week ago from OS2007 and I could really use people's advice (I ask several specific questions at the end of this post). My source for the OS2008 was http://noneus.de/ where I downloaded RX-34_2008SE_2.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin. It downloaded quickly on my broadband connection (about 134 mb in maybe three minutes) and I flashed it to my N800 using the latest Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard. This also was speedy and I was soooohhh….. optimistic. Little did I know what was to come. Btw, I was having no problems with OS2007, although I used it mainly for surfing and e-mail and some YouTube video watching: plain vanilla applications and nothing beyond. I was looking forward to OS2008 and being able to more easily install other apps I had been reading about. Here is a summary of my issues: 1. Navigating (scrolling around with the stylus either on the page itself or on the scroll bar on the right) on almost all webpages is slower than before. 2. Navigating is sticky and jerky and extremely frustrating. 3. On some web pages now, the stylus cannot drag the page at all – up, down or anywhere! 4. Same as #3 above for finger dragging – it doesn’t work at all on many pages or it works slow, sticky and jerky (and thus pretty useless). 5. Finger keyboard ONLY comes up by pressing the center button on the scroll control and will not come up - as it did with OS2007 on same device – with a simply tap of my finger on the input field. This is not the way this function is supposed to work and is totally inexcusable. I know that many others have already reported on this malfunction. 6. The default font size is smaller on every page – I think this may mean that the screen resolution was changed in OS2008 to include more of the web page on the screen. This is also inexcusable because the default size is now unbelievable tiny! I would like to know who made this asinine decision so I could tell her or him just how asinine it was. There should be a choice of screen resolutions as there is in the Windows OS, so one can adjust the font size. 7. Not everything, but many things in OS2008 work slower for me than OS2007. 8. On the stylus keyboard, there is no longer a CAPS LOCK key – only an “En” key where Caps Lock used to be (En is a language-related key). What happened to Caps Lock? How can I type all CAPS when I need to, without pressing the Cap arrow every single time?! 9. My N800 often completely freezes or gets hung up for 30-60 seconds – it never did that with OS2007. As a matter of fact, I am getting increasingly angry as I type this, thinking of how unpleasant and impractical my N800 has become to use, since I “upgraded” to OS2008. I am also ticked off at all the hype about how slick and smooth OS2008 is. For me, it’s about as slick as molasses going uphill. Now that I’ve vented, let’s get solution-oriented. Here are my questions: - Are others having the same terrible experience with OS2008 or is it just me? - If it’s just me, did I get a bad or corrupted version of OS2008, i.e. should I download it again from a different source and then re-flash in the hope that the second time it will work properly? - Should I flash back to OS2007? - Is there something I have overlooked? This is entirely possible – I am no expert!! All advice is welcome and appreciated, except anyone saying that “this was all covered in many other posts.” I have read dozens of prior posts in the forums and have not seen anyone else having the extensive catalog of problems and overall huge disappointment with OS2008 that I am having. Thanks very much for listening, folks! |

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I'll say 'thumbs up'.
I'm a relative new user to the N800 and waited for the official release of OS2008. Web embedded flash video is much improved and the new look is welcome. The only thing that I don't like is the new way to bring up the thumboard keyboard and the screen seems less sensitive to finger taps. No problems installing apps except the well documented problem with a certain 'repostory' :) Unless there is a specific application you need that is not available for OS2008, I say go for it. |

i'm a brand new user of the n800 and i love os2008. thumbs up for the fresh look. it could do with system-wide kinetic scrolling, more finger friendly ui (especially in the browser)and some more easy access buttons.
the os2008 is superb but its rollout was abismal. more repository servers....this is not an experiment anymore, its serious mainstream so everything has to be ready at release. i love my new n800 so much and os2008. i look foward to the next update with many needed bug fixes and performance improvements. long live maemo and nokia internet tablets. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Like snowlog, I have noticed as well that scrolling has become especially problamatic; the touch screen is barely usable at best. Highlighting instead of scrolling really bugs the heck out of me. Hmm, I really hope that Nokia resolves this issue soon...

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I personally really like OS2008, it feels a lot more snappy to me, plus the gui is a lot more visually appealing. transparency on the home screen, a lot more 'finger friendly' and overall just looks so much nicer. :-)

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Thanks to all who posted comments on this thread.
Update 2. After a week of reading posts, downloading apps and playing with all the new apps I have with the new os2008 it's a truly amazing little tablet. I now have unzip app, spreadsheet app, games, media players and many many other great and useful apps. :) But it will be another year before I have another week off to spend repeating this weeks efforts. It was a rewarding experience that I will never be able to repeat. Next time I will pay someone to do it. I just don't have the time. If this tablet is to go to the general public in large numbers it will need to have a simpler and easier way to load apps. Without this forum I would have returned it and gotten something easier to expand. Great work to everyone who developed the apps and assists all new users. You should be very proud of your work. :) Nokia really needs to bring it's resources to make this process simpler and intuitive if they want to rule in the tablet world. It's a great platform that will change the way we compute and communicate. lol :) |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I'm going to have to revise my stance. It seems that the upgrade is causing my battery to drain faster than it did under OS2007. I did a full recharge (10 days/7hrs), put it in soft power off, and let it set for a day (no usage at all). When I came back, it was at 6 days / 4 hours.
Right now, thumbs down because battery life is a major factor in my book. |

I have another question reg Bluetooth headset. I read on some thread that BT headphones are working now on OS2008. I mean without any external BT transmitter connected to headphone slot. Can anybody confirm this? Also read other threads, on navigation softwares for N800. Alternates for Maemo Mapper and Built in wayfinder. Maemo Mapper needs internet connection while travelling and wayfinder involves recurring costs (not just one time). |

Many Thumbs up
Many Thumbs up, borrow thumbs from my whole family as we all using N800.
Dl, install, up and running in less than 15 min! Step by step: 1) Fully charge your N800, 2) Install the Nokia software update from http://europe.nokia.com/A4305010, and follow the instructions. 3) Hook up your N800 with the USB to PC, and use automatic update. The previous way, first dl, then install does not work as smooth since the update file is NOT named *.bin, and an extra step is needed before the update wizard recognise the file. Of course, if you want to update to a version NOT the latest, you will have to dl first then update. Videocenter and Skype is up and running. Katie Couric is just as sweet as in OS2007 :) bun |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I have to edit my initial 'thumbs up'. It's become thumbs down now I've used the new OS a bit longer.
- browsing is slow with the capital S. To the point it's useless. (I now know why they made the cpu run faster...) - memory use of the browser skyrockets on some pages. It didn't do that on these pages in OS2007. - browser settings seem not to work: it's not saving passwords and the dictonary isn't using new words. - thumbkeyboard is useless (mentioned before, but nevertheless) Not directly OS related: - repositories not reachable, as a result many apps not installing (ie. Canola) All in all it's a firm thumbs down. Downgrading seems a good option. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I give it a thumbs down, and reflashed back to 2007. Although the media player plays more video types, and I like the radio, I could not get my i747 to work. But more importantly for me, I lost the ability to run VNC. I bought my 2 N800s to use to read my company email "page", to web browse, and to jump onto my servers in emergencies (not as media toys). As a non Linux person, 2008 gave me no help. Perhaps as more apps become available but I use the 2007 more. Wish there was a LOT more MS Office integration too. The browser seems to freeze a lot. And still looking for an easy FTP (GUI) program...

Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Thumbs up.
I certainly will not go back to OS 2007. The Browser is good – better than MicroB and Opera in OS2007. Mediaplayer, RSS and mail work fine for me. Browser is a bit slow and there are some flaws, (still my favourite Reuters is not displayed correctly) but I'm sure they will be solved. My repositories in my application catalog are still a mess. I had to use my old settings to get things running. I am wondering how all those fresh Amazon Internet Tablet (best seller) buyers did cope with all this. Nevertheless, all applications work nicely. Streaming YouTube is much better. Some questions: - Can somebody tell me when I can make a 'fresh' download from the Nokia site to sort up my repositories? - Why do I need mplayer for wmv videos? Was expecting the Mediaplayer to do that in OS2008. - Streaming mp4 in Mediaplayer is very good: watch mp4 from this site.: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/...in706903.shtml - However I still can’t see many mainstream sites: for example BBC news (video). Any ideas ? Congratulations. Abel |

Next week the fun is over and do I have to work with and talk to real people (not within a Tabel Forum) again ! :D But: it was fun and the Tablet with OS 2008 is a succes: does a lot more and better than the IPhone! (good thing to shout at, but not a computer). I wrote earlier that "those Maemo end TEAM people" must mature their work (architecture, quality control, etc.) rapidly. This all is still true, but reading their - very defending - reactions taught me that they do understand and I am confident they will get things better. . I also see the potential for great success and love my N800 with OS 2008 and the walkaround web! (And, next week, I will take my N800 to work, just for showing off ....) So, Thumbs Up. Abel. |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
So I guess Im the only clown using OS2008 and who is satisfied ?
I'm using the N800 as is and always with the stylus. Never had a trouble with OS2008, Browsing is rock solid for the websites I go to. No touchscreen problem as I'm using the stylus (hey, it's a computer, not an iPod Touch...) |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
I'm quite happy with OS2008. If it's "useless" for browsing, as one person in this thread said, why are so many people using it? I'm just watching a Frontline story that is excellent. How did I do that with something that is useless? Doesn't that mean the same thing as "cannot be used"?
|
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
Another newbie here who is very satisfied with my month-old N800 now with OS2008. It does all I expected it to do and more. Great Wifi connections, tethers to my SE W810i just fine and e-mail is no problem. It turns on and off perfectly and has lots of battery life.
Loaded Skype... it worked fine.... then I uninstalled it since I won't use it. Same with Gizmo Project (including video to and from my home PC). Just for grins, I took a couple of DVDs and following a few links and instructions from Internet Tablet Talk, converted and loaded a few movies on the thing for when I'm stuck somewhere with nothing to entertain me. My N800 rides happily in my car's glovebox where it is used as necessary... not as my primary Internet access tool. Bill |
Re: Thumbs up or down for new OS2008 for N800
In my personal case, it is a mixing feeling situation.
Lets start with the positive side: the speed; in fact is almost a hardware improvement due the embedded processor overclock, and speed is always welcome! The interface is a way better, more readable and comfortable. The smart thing that when you install apps from the app manager, it remembers your last selection. Better WM streams capabilities Negative side/suggestions: "Right clik" does'nt always locks in position Drag and drop doesn't always works..(sometimes you need several attempts to get the things done) The "fingers keyboard" issue I don't understand why there isn't an easy way to add/delete icons on left side of the desktop (contacts, web, etc) I've found some "dictatorials aspects":D here, p.e. you can´t easily get ride of the Raphsody thing. You can only remove empty folders when you are rearranging folders (?) Don't understand also why you can't put folders' shortcuts on desktop. (Is there a way to do that?) Nice would be if the Nokia update wizard let you to select when you want to install the OS and apps (I mean be able to install the OS on Internal-external card whe flashing). That will be and easy, non scary process for those "normal" users that don't will to play with fire thru the dual boot installation procedure. Not complete WM streams capability, still some of them works, some others not. |
