Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I'm having trouble with this. Gizmo will receive the calls, but the general internet call is not picking up nor dialing out if gizmo is closed. Also Extras/Rtcom cannot connect to update.

I used the method posted without the rtcom update but its not working. There is some discrepancy in the settings too.

Gizmo says sip number is sip:1xxxxxxxxxx@proxy1.sipphone.com

The linked setup thread above says to enter xxxxxxxxxx@prox1.sipphone.com

What are other people doing or why isn't rtcom updating?

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

This was covered around post 35, It's proxy01.sipphone.com
From home I use auto-detect, at work I need to specify ports. Kind of annoying if I wanted to use this for incoming calls. I just start gizmo when making a grandcentral outgoing call, and haven't found it practical for incoming calls.

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I really don't get this, I got it all set up just the way set out and all work fine except all my outgoing calls take credit off Gizmo, what am I doing wrong?

jandmdickerson 2008-01-23 06:06

Wow i tried this and when i dial (poke one of my address book contacts)from my grandcentral account it dials the gizmo number then rings my cell phone only once, it shows on my cell caller id that th call is from my grandcentral number, but does not connect after only ringing once. When i dial directly from my n810 'new internet call' program it will place the call and shows my gizmo number as the incoming call, however i can only hear from the receiving side and i cannot hear anything on the n810 dialing side. i reproduced this peculiar behavior it over my bluetooth in case it was a router issue--any ideas? thanks

I think you have to start the call from Grand Central. Like putting the # in the address book of Grand Central, then selecting it and call (pick your Gizmo #).

So does this only work on landlines only in the US or can it be used to make long distance calls. And how about cellphones? Does it work with this?

It works like a regular phone, though I'm not sure how'd they charge you. Calling anyone's cellphone will take minutes from them (as always, unless they have weekends free or after 9pm or some sort like that). Calling someone's landlines is usually free. It's the person making the call that gets charged usually. But I'm not sure how'd that work out.

Btw, does anyone have trouble logging into the www.m.grandcentral.com website? It redirects you to www.grandcentral.com/mobile but it won't let me login on my n800 but it lets my laptop and desktop do it. And I really hate using the flash interface, so slow. :(

Edit: Hmm it works sometimes.. Also oddly now the default internet call app is saying that it can't connect. Proxy01 must be down I guess.

Edit2: Pinged it, it's up.. but for some reason it says authentication failed even when it's right..

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I'm having a problem connecting (through Sipphone, apparently) with my N800/OS2008. The green disc (presence) icon in the Status Bar is red with a slash through it and when N800 boots up, I get "network error" and "authentication failed" associated with internet calling. I'm glad you reported a similar problem - I'm going to assume it's a problem on their end for now.

ShyBoy 2008-01-28 21:43

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

that authentication failed with gizmoProject is something else...
this problem stats since this morning. Not sure if something changed on Gizmoproject's end. I opened the ticket there.

jweinel 2008-01-28 23:07

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I did some further research in the Gizmo forums regarding the "authentication failed" problem I reported earlier today (and confirmed by ShyBoy). A Gizmo user troubleshooting a similar problem last year on another device reported that the user name in account setup should contain your SIP Number and not your Gizmo Name.

In the N800 Internet Call "Account setup: User Name" dialog, I replaced my Gizmo Name with my SIP Number (for example: 17471234567@proxy01.sipphone.com). That did the trick and SIP is now "connected" on my N800. My internet calling was working yesterday with myGizmoName@proxy01.sipphone.com, so something must have changed in their system. Maybe they will reply to Shyboy's ticket with an explanation.

Ok, I just tried a call by clicking on a number in my GC address book on N800 web page. My N800 rang, I answered, and then the called number rang. Seems to work now.

changing the login to sip number worked although it has worked with user name up to now. strange - something changed - the rtcomm update maybe?

thanks for the advice

Getting back on subject:

Is there any log on the N800 that would help troubleshoot problems like this? Authentication error is not very helpful.

(and yes, I got mime working using my number and not my ID)

I was keep trying this on every after 15-20 min and finally it worked now.

I am using my 1747 number, id seems not to be working.

And I am sure that this is something to do with Gizmoproject not rtcomm and having the same problem with my ATA device as well. now both seems to be working just 10 min ago.

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

If you're getting the failed authenticatiion message and/or the exclamation point on the presence ico , try this:

1. go to sipphone.com
2. click "member login"
3. login with you sip #
4. click "advanced features"
5. click "clear sip registrations"
6. reboot n8x0

That solved the problem for me. Occasionally, it reverts back to the error mode, and repeating these steps fixes it.

OK, I have everything set up but when a call to Grandcentral rings my tablet, I click on the little green phone icon it seems to answer (it switches to a red hangup icon) but I can't ever get to the phonepad to click on the number 1 to accept the call. Any help for a newb on getting theis to answer incoming calls?

Assuming your using the built in sipphone client (the one with the Presence icons..the green/red/yellow dot) then you need to click menu (either the menu button or the top left that lists the name of the application). Then look for an option that says DTFM dialing. That brings up the dial pad where you can press 1.

OK, that worked, but surelay there has to be a better way to answer the phone than jumping through those hoops every time...:(

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

If I ever find a better way, I'll be sure to let you know. It's not actually that hard for me (I'm use to it now). It's only a problem when my device is locked. So I have to enter the lock code. >.<

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I used the following video tutorial and found it very easy to set up. I don't need to press 1 to answer a call - I just hit the phone icon and it answers. No rtcom app needed either. Just Gizmo and Grancentral:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...arch&plindex=5

I have some invites available as well: PM me with your email address and I'll hook you up.

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

I think making the phone call (starting the call from Grand Central) doesn't require pressing 1. It's receiving calls that require pressing 1.

Sorry guys I'm kind of slow...
I have signed up for GC & Gizmo
I have number from GC, but am trying to figure out how to get the phone # from Gizmo?

How do you get the number from Gizmo again?

Laughing Man 2008-02-18 06:24

Re: HOWTO: Free Landline Calls - Beta

If you go to the Gizmo Project website and login. They should list your number there. Usually starts with 747.

All right, I just discovered this thread and spread 15 min. reading it. Ok, so lemee get things straight. The only way you can make a call to a number is from your computer? Or can you make calls from your n800? And one more thing...how do you sign up for gizmo?

And since both are SIP operable (still don't understand it fully myself..just that it's an open protocal for voice to voice then let's say Skype) that means it's free to interchange voice calls inbetween the two services.

Hey Laughing Man,

How do I connect Gizmo to use Grand Central? I have Grand Central using my Gizmo number. Is there a setting to have Gizmo use Grand Central?

If you want to make a call you have to be at some WIFI point and go to the GrandCentral website or mobile grandcentral website (m.grandcentral.com which isn't flash heavy) and then initate the call from there. It then will call whatever phone you selected (say Gizmo) and if you are running Gizmo or the sipphone # then it'll call the n800 as well as any Gizmo that is logged into that account. To sign up for Gizmo just go to www.gizmoproject.com

loughmillermedia, to connect Gizmo to GrandCentral you just need to add the Gizmo # into Grand Central. When you make a call from the GrandCentral website it will ask you which phones (out of the #s you've listed) to call. For example, for me it's my home phone, Gizmo, or cell phone. Just choose Gizmo after you choose the phone # to dial, and then it'll ring whatever computers have Gizmo Project open. Or the sipphone # (if you are using the built in client in the n800 [not Gizmo] with the sipphone #.

To receive phone calls, you can set up GrandCentral in settings to dial all phones, certain phones (Say, only Gizmo). And when people call your Grand Central #, Grand Central will forward the call to say your n800 running Gizmo or the sipphone service.
