I have some cracks on mine also, but so far they don't seem to affect anything other than cosmetically.

9a6or 2006-05-24 23:10

Just for the record I have found a tiny hairline fracture but it's not at the bottom (around the sockets) but at the back rim of this protruding plastic bit. There is a little hump on the rim with the crack on it. It seems to me that the poor quality plastic bit is snapped onto the main case and this causes tension leading to cracks over time.

Any kind of physical damage to my Nokia 770 due to misuse is out of question.

I suggest people check their N770s and report back here. This might give us all a better chance to convince Nokia that our claims are valid.

same (extended) crack on my 770 :-(

Checking mine i found EXACTLY the same crack like the on in your new picture - extending from the headphone to the usb input to the power plug. :-(

Did anyone contact Nokia and what was the exact reply from Nokia ? Seems like people get mixed feedback. Did they say they fix it for free as long as your under warranty ? I bought mine @ CUSA.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How about a new thread with a poll?

Note that the piece ("bezel") is a piece of plastic separate from the main body of the case. It appears that it is made of some form of graphite or brittle composite (not more forgiving ABS plastic).

It is obvious that this is one of the last pieces pressed into place (pressure fit) in the unit's final assembly. Take note that the headphone jack and the power plugs have their own sleeve.

Immense pressure is required to put, set and keep them in place, so twisting and compression is present.

I assume that these units are hand-assembled, so you have a human error component. I also assume that the fractures are developed from the factory assembly line - when the bezel is pressed into place - most likely because it is OFF CENTERED (effectively becoming a miniature "moment arm" and cracking the piece).

Just my personal analysis.

And me thinking it was just a bad "Angle of the dangle"!

Good observations Jambee. It is a definite out of control issue. I just bought another one off Ebay because the Price dicated that I must. (Alleged defective, loaded new Firmware and its Jammin!! Hate when that happens) but the first thing I noticed was the dreaded bottom piece carck. NOKIA is going to have to address it. It is just a matter of will they issue a recall, or just "happily" replace each one on a "per unit" basis. Obviously many will ignore it, think it is their fault etc, and this will be better for NOKIA to just ride it out.

Great service from Nokia Finland

Just received my 770 from Nokia Finnish service. It was sent to Nokia 22.5. the 25th was even a national hollyday in finland!. Fastening cover was replaced, no questions were asked

cybe 2006-05-29 15:36

Did you take it to some store in Helsinki for instance or send it somewhere please?

In Finland you take it to the nearest local Nokia service point (listed in Nokia internet pages). They send it further and when ready you pick it up at the same service point

Happened to me over the weekend.
A little piece came off.
Should I send it back ?
I live in Belgium

My three-week old 770 has started to get that crack as well.

It is definitely a manufacturer's defect. I have applied a small bead of Loctite along the crack to hopefully prevent it from spreading. I will see how it goes and maybe buff it smooth. This is a DEFINITE mass defect.

yeah just noticed that mine started cracking too
from the power jack to the usb socket all the way to the headphone jack.

NokNok770 2006-06-12 13:55

I hardly ever take the case off, but when I did, I notice mine is chipped and there's a big hole on the side behind the microphone. You can barely see it with the case on, but I've been using without the case more now with the thumb keyboard. It fits better in my hand without the case. Now I do have a 2 year compUSA warranty plan. I wonder if I should exercise my right and trade in?

zuti 2006-06-14 21:31

There goes my 770. 6 months of use, and the first crack appeared about a week ago. The crack has already grown a bit, and it seems like a part of the plastic will be chipping off soon.

My device has been handled very carefully as well. Annoying.

Coolty 2006-06-14 21:49

my nokia too has a crack in the bottom near the power plug
but you cannot see it without a magnifiying glass... it just looks like a thin hair is there.

Xyzo 2006-06-14 21:51

I've noticed the crack too: from the headset hole to the USB port. It has appeared last week...
...after having installed the ITOS2006 beta... but I'm quite sure this has nothing to see with ;-)

One more crack

Greetings:
Looks like you can add me to the cracked Nokia case thread. I have had mine for less than 3 months and it has the crack running from the USB port to the earphone jack hole. I pride myself in keeping my equipment like new. It is really not distracting, or noticeable; however my concern is whether or not should something else happen to my 770, will Nokia honor the warranty.

Robert

Me too

Wasn't there yesterday but is there today. From the USB port across to the headphone jack just like everyone else.

Crack of Doom!

I own a MGB sports car and they are notorious for developing a crack in the door under where the quarter light window seals up against the windscreen pillar.

It's known as the "Crack of Doom".

Seems Nokia also have a Crack Of Doom manufacturing problem themselves!

NokNok770 2006-06-15 03:02

When you give it a name like "the crack of doom" maybe Nokia will do something. Since it's just a separate piece, maybe nokia can ship us an improved piece and we can snap a new one on.

Odin 2006-06-15 03:27

Time for action.

This is happening too often--Nokia needs to address this.

I agree... I don't just have a crack, I got a piece chipped off. It's ugly.

Lance Fortune 2006-06-15 03:41

I haven't had my 770 very long, and it's cracked from the USB port to the power port. I normally associate Nokia good quality. A fix would be nice.

zetsurin 2006-06-15 11:20

I've had my 770 for 3 or 4 months and around a month ago developed the crack that runs from the USB socket to the headphone socket. I witnessed the thing grow from a very small hairline crack to the very visible crack that it is now. Haven't done anything to the 770 that would warrant this to occur.

bac522 2006-06-23 17:58

This reminds me of a problem Canon had with the G2 Powershot. Took awhile of complaining in the user formum, but eventually Canon owned up to the problem and offered to fix it. Here is a link about it http://www.dpreview.com/news/0204/02...ackcomment.asp

The funny thing about the Canon G2 crack is you actually needed a magnifying glass to see it, but like those here the crack was minor or in some case a piece would fall out of the camera.
