Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
worked great , a couple of the icons were large , and it didnt resize them to 40... had to re-edit them in paintshop and they showed up fine.. except for and icon of a pirate flag that i use for gtk-gnutella... shows up as square instead of the correct rectangle shape. same with a couple others that arent even squares
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Munky, for rectangular icons, make sure the file itself is a square size. The image on it can be rectangular and then it won't get distorted
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
man , cant believe i didnt think of that! now everything is lookin good , thaks for your help! my girlfriend said shes glad that theres people out there to help anal-rententive geeks like myself so she doesnt have to hear me b***h about stuff not being even. LOL

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
was wondering , what command would i type to get it to open a specific .txt file?
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
I installed personall menu 0.6-3 on my nokia n800 from garage.maemo
I can open the settings dialog from the control panel but it does not replace any menus. Am i missing something ? |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
look for the "panels" dialog. there, un-tick contacts, and select personal menu...
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
munky: It depends what program you want to open the text file in. Most editor will take a file as an argument from the command line. For example:
Code:
nano /home/user/text.txt |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
id want to open it in the built in notes program the filename is "POF msgs"
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Munky: Here is the best I can do. Create an entry in personal menu with the following executable (assuming you saved your note in the "Document" folder of the internal storage, otherwise change the path):
Code:
dbus-send --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.osso_notes /com/nokia/osso_notes com.nokia.osso_notes.mime_open string:"file:///home/user/MyDocs/.documents/POF\ msgs.note.html" |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Wow, what a great application, I just finished un-installing the Simple Launcher app. after just minutes with your app.
(I too was stumped on why it wouldn't give me the tick box in panels, you just need to un-tick the contacts one, as previously posted) Definately a better UI menu system then the one provided, it's just a simple and clean UI. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Personal Menu has been updated to version 0.7-2. This new version is available in the maemo-extras repository. Check the first post for the update details.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Just sayin thanx. A bump to the top (especially when there's a new version -- can never be a bad thing for program this great
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
I can't install it - complains about some error in the control file i think.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Bundyo: What error does it give? Does it install from command line with dpkg? Any errors there?
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Hmm. Installed fine for me.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
On second thought looks like my available file got broken. False alarm.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
fiferboy, this is a great app. Since you bold the "categories" in the control panel, any chance of doing that in the menu? Also, I like being able to select the font color, but would it be possible to select the background color as well?
Just a couple of quick thoughts on a really great program. Thx. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
frasej,
If you are using the "system font" options in the settings tab, headings should be bold by default. You can override the font settings for both regular entries (non-headings) and headings separately. Simply select a bold font for your heading font, and a non-bold font for your regular font. Selectable background colour is probably doable. My original intent was to keep to the theme colours, but I decided some flexibility with fonts was a good idea to differentiate heading and regular entries. If people want customizable background, I am willing to put it in ;) |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Thanks for the update to this truly outstanding utility! I did see the 0.7-2 update advertised in Application Manager Updates for today but when I tried to install from that point, I got the error "Unable to install. Software contains updates to packages installed from a different source and is likely to harm the system. Contact software author." Next, I tried to install from your "One click install" link on page 1 of this thread, but got the same error. Finally, I went to the garage page and downloaded the 0.7-2_armel.deb file and the install was completed without errors. Just thought I would note this in case others have a problem.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
jweniel, it is probably easiest to uninstall the version you have and then install from the repository. This way you can just upgrade through the application manager next time an update is released. You won't loose any configuration data doing it this way.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
After I updated to 0.7-2 I can't add items to the menu. (I'll admit I haven't tried adding anything during the past few updates so I can't say whether this problem started with this update.) I tap 'Add', tap 'Select from installed applications', pick an item, tap on 'OK' and it exits with a box that says "Internal error. Application 'Contaol panel' closed."
I also find that if I start Personal Menu maintenance from the Control panel, and then tap 'Edit' without selecting anything that it exits the program and bounces me back to the desktop. Weird stuff. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Pushwall: I can fix the "Edit" on no selection crash. I fixed it for delete, up, and down, but forgot edit!
I also had your "cannot add anything" problem, but thought it was due to my development path. It might be a problem with your ~/.personal_menu.rc file. Try opening it and saving it, and seeing if that fixes the problem. Thanks for your report. Edit: I have fixed the "Edit" button crash. It will be in the next release. Edit II: I found and fixed the "Adding application" problem. It was a typo in my code. For the time being, add you "Select from installed application" by double clicking on the item, not by pressing "OK". I will upload a fix now for 0.7-3 |

great app, btw. I use it every day. :) I just wanted to clarify: If I uninstall my previous installation, then re-install (from the repository), I won't lose any configuration data from the previous installation? I only ask because this seems contrary to how most people (or most people like me, or maybe just me) would interpret the un-install process to work... |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
briand,
I don't have any postrm that deletes the ~/.personal_menu.rc, so you should be fine |

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
0.7-3 has hit the repos. It fixes the two problems mentioned earlier in this thread: crash when clicking "Edit" with nothing selected, and crash when clicking "Ok" when adding desktop files.
I am looking into frasej's issue with some style options not taking affect. If you find any issues, post them here and I will do my best to fix them quickly. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
fiferboy, You said, in a pm, that I had a lot of items on my personal menu. Well, here's what it looks like:
http://home.comcast.net/~frasej3/ima...sonal_menu.png :o I love this app. :p |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
frasej: Definitely a lot of items!
frasej's problem was to do with using "<" and ">" in header entries. This seems to be a limitation of GKeyFiles (which I use for the configuration file) although I have never seen mention of it. Maybe I will switch to XML for the configuration file, but I don't know of a way to do that without breaking everyone's original. Maybe if the XML file doesn't exist, load the rc file. Then when it is being edited, dump to XML instead of rc and use that from then on? |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Unless others complain, I wouldn't put too much effort in on this change. You might just want to consider a warning about using > and <.
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
frasej unearthed an important issue. Characters like "<", ">", and "&" are going to cause problems. I am working on escaping the text so this is not a problem, but g_markup_escape_text is not working as I would expect it.
Edit: I forgot to mention - it is not a problem with GKeyFile as I first suspected, but with PangoMarkup, which I use to set the fonts for the menu. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
I just love that personal menu :) Great work!
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
On a semi Personal Menu related note, does anyone have the default setting for the ~/.osso/hildon-dekstop/desktop.conf file lying around? It would be greatly appreciated. I was extremely stupid and didn't make a backup. *faceplam*
*edit* Nevermind - found it. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Am in the process of setting up Personal Menu and have entered 13 applications and 3 headings. I now
find that I cannot scroll down to the bottom of the 'Arranged Items' list without the programme crashing - at about the 14th item it closes and the following message appears 'Internal error. Application 'Control panel' closed.' |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
wamjib: Are you using any special characters in your headeings? Like <, >, or &? There is a problem with these that I am looking to fix. If you edit the ~/.personal_menu.rc file and remove them everything should be fine.
If not, could you send me your .personal_menu.rc file so I can take a look? Thanks |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
fiferboy: no, am not using any odd characters in my headings and by way of a little update - since posting my first message I attempted to add a further application but on clicking the 'OK' button everything froze.
Now, to show my exceedingly green newbie status: have emelFM2 installed but cannot locate the file requested - could you please provide me with the full path. Once found, I can copy it to my SD card but to forward to you, do I send it privately by way of an attachment to an email or post it to this site? Your quidance will be appreciated. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
wamjib: the file is located in /home/user/ and is named .personal_menu.rc
This is a hidden configuration file, so you will have to click the crooked little "H" on the top toolbar of emelFM2 to see it. Please send it as a PM to me by clicking my name and selecting "Send private message" and I will see what I can do to identify and fix your problem. |
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
I've just re-flashed and got my personal menu back. In the interim, it has been upgraded and much improved! I just want to add my thanks for this wonderful app. It definitely increases the functionality of my IT! Bravo!:D
|
Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu
Is anyone else experiencing difficulties with the Personal Menu control panel? When I try to open it, it closes the App Manager and pops up an "Internal Error: Application Manager Closed" message.
