Exactly what works for you? You can get GVM to see the SD card? PTunes works? Not sure which message you are replying to and which apps you have working.

Yes, including the previous beta. You just need to set the J-Pilot serial port (under File->Preferences->Settings) to "net:any" and tell Garnet VM the IP address of the machine running J-Pilot.

My HotSych ID is stored, but only after the first completely clean synch. If the process exits with any error the ID is not saved.

Has anyone gotten alarms to work in the Datebook?

As a test, I set an alarm and when the time came for the alarm to go off, Datebook simply crashed and exited.

GoogleMaps Mobile runs in square 320 x 320 mode. Does anyone know a way to have it use the Grafitti area and run 480 x 320?

This is superb. I've just installed it and it looks amazing.

Just a couple of points that seem to stand out :
  1. It would be excellent if there was an option to jump straight to the palm home screen rather than via one of the apps.
  2. In the Garnet VM Launcher would it not be simpler if you could double click on the icons to launch rather than having to select the icon then select launch.

Both items are really small beer in the long run but I feel would add considerably to the user experience.

I agree with both, but IIRC someone found a way with the previous beta to run an app directly (via xterm, etc.). If so, that should work to get you into whatever app, and then one click to the home screen...

You'd only use the GVM launcher for configuration and installation of new apps, then...

Just a reminder, the only way Access would know of the problems you are having is if you fill-up the official Compatibility Survey form: http://www.access-company.com/produc.../feedback.html

My fav game PAC-MAN is running just as strong as in my Atari. PM me if one wants a copy. I do not want to post it, as it is NOT my software.

Edit: I am totally totally ambarrass, the version of Pac-Man I have is a locked version and my key is, of course, long gone. So much about it, I apologize to all the requests. I did send you a copy, you can either play with it for 15 second or send in some $ to unlock it. Sorry.

This works, though not reliably. It seems as if the launcher requires a very specific, brief, interval between the tap. Practice ;) .

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

My experience seems to be **much worse** that most posted so far. I created a new GVM installation and installed about 60 Mb of applications and data that had been on a previous installation. It worked O.K. at first. Then, I tried to change the font size within MyBible, and GVM crashed--destroying the entire installation (wiping the gvm.store file). That's much worse than anything I experienced with the previous beta. (I had used the same font size function at least 100 times using the previous beta.)

I have a few other thoughts:

1) Access has not increased the 64 Mb image limit. Currently, I have created 4 separate launchable GVM's so that I can install just some of the software and data that I had working on my T3. This is a pain because I have to stop one GVM and launch another to use some applications.

The behavior of the GVM makes me guess that Access may not increase this limit unless it can vastly speed up launch times. Startup times are fast for installations with smaller footprints (< 15 Mb); however, the GVM still starts very slowly (approx. 30 seconds) for installations with gvm.store files in the 55+ Mb range. I would guess that Access may be setting a 64 Mb upper limit because larger installations would be painfully slow in starting.

2) As far as I know, Access uses a proprietary format for the storage file (gvm.store). In my opinion, it would be a **vast improvement** to move to a open format, such as a vfat image file mounted as a loopback device. Doing so would allow users to directly edit the storage file. In my case, this would speed up installation of applications and data, and it would allow me to install non pdb/prc files without syncing. Note that the external storage cards on Palms are currently formatted as vfat.

3) I wonder if launch times could be drastically reduced by selecting a default application to be launched and then caching that information/image on exit.

I've upped the heap from 2 to 4MB and I think it's more stable. I have to play some more (darn!) but no crashes after a few warps.

Actually your advice was very helpful to finally get sync running on my Mac with MissingSync software.

First, I installed jPilot using Fink. Then I configured the settings as you said above. But I still could not sync due to the user ID being NULL.
Second, I used jPilot to install my user ID: File --> Install User and performed sync.

Afterwards, I can now sync with jPilot or my Mac using MissingSync. Yippee!!

But overall I can not say that I am impressed with the second Beta. Two of the most important issues were not addressed: better user settings, especially with the user ID and access to the SD card (the most important).

Try with display compatibility, helps with some odd crashes.

With this release and all the excitement I plan to install tonight. One question though: I hear good things about graffiti input. Is there an easy way (or any way at all) to get the text generated through graffiti into, say, the browser, so I could compose emails in Garnet and then send the text via gmail?

Not any native Tablet apps (I may be proved wrong someday :p)... However, GMail offers a Palm version that should run in Garnet >> http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/8...lient-updated/

If anyone would like some great games by PDAMill that run really good with Garnet VM go here (recently released as freeware):
http://pdamill.com/prod_palm.shtml

Get the 480x320 versions. I found they all run fullscreen...some fullscreen portrait and some even in fullscreen landscape (some upside down but they work)! I had trouble initially running some of them but found once I configured them to run as device Tungsten T/X with display compatibility they ran fine.

The games are:
Arvale: Journey of Illusion
Snails
GameBox Asia
GameBox Classics
GameBox Solitaire
GameBox Solitare II

Thanks, YoDude. (And thanks again for the IDEN solution. I'm really loving the free mobile internet!)

Following the links through, I stumbled up on this.

JVM download for Palm OSŪ devices no longer available from Palm

As of January 12, 2008, Palm no longer has rights to distribute the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to our customers. JVM allows users to install and run Java applications and games on Palm OSŪ devices.
It then suggests VersaMail for the palm. Do you advise pursuing this option?

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2

Put Documents to Go on there (though nothing else, yet). The big disadvantage is not being able to save the files outside of the storage heap (at least from what I've seen so far). It was showing promise as being a potential alternative to being able to write txt or .doc files on this machine until the new Abiword comes along.

IMHO, graffiti within GVM ain't all that...

I spent more time correcting the letter "H" with the thing then it would have taken to form the letter on granite with a dang hammer and chisel. :D

I don't have any problem using the native email app with Gmail settings. Once you trust yourself with semi-blind typing you can get quite fast with the N800's on screen thumb board.

...so I wouldn't use GVM for email. :)

At this time GVM is a curiosity for me. It shows what a properly built JAVA VM could do... There are now 1,000's of specialized J2ME apps out there, many more than Palm apps I would think.

How do you config the apps (.prc) to fetch the data file (.pdb). I extracted the Classics. It came with 1 .prc and 2 .pdb. Upon running classics, it flagged an error "error opening Classics CD...pdb". I guess one has to provide a path for the .pdb files. Anyone knows how to do it?
TIA,

Edit: I figured out. You have to install them one by one and it will then run.

I simply installed the .pdb files when I installed the .prc files. Seems to work OK.

You should be able to install all at once during your hotsync.

So I never tried this on the last one, but if you install the app "MultiUserHack" and then go to the MUH Preferences, it'll let you change the default hotsync name without actually hotsyncing. (You can also change the hotsync name for each specific app if you're installing apps from multiple different devices you've collected over the years.)

Grafitti works GREAT. If you had trouble making the h, you could have gone to the trouble of finding out how it is recommended to make the h. I haven't had any trouble, so I haven't looked it up. I studied Graffitti about what, almost ten years ago, and I discovered that I picked it up again in about a minute.

It really makes the Nokia handwriting recognition attempts look sick, unfortunately.
